"".n".11146118"4414E 44111111 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS NEWS `Hymie' remarks being used as diversion: Jackson Washitigton (JTA) — The Rev. Jesse Jackson charged last weekend that the "Hymie" issue is being used as a "diversionary" tactic to prevent discussion' of stich issues as Israel's ties to South Africa. "If one has an attitude that's negative or cynical„ one may consider it an in- sult," Jackson said in re- sponse to a telephone call on a Public Broadcasting Sys- tem call-in program from Newark, N.J. He said his remarks earlier this year in which he called Jews "Hyrnies". and New York "Hymietown" had no "reli- gious or political overtones. "I really thinkpeople who have not responded with a forgiving attitude may be using that term as a diver- sionary from more serious issues that must be wrestled with between two com- munities," he said. Jackson, who is cam- paigning in New Jersey for the Democratic Party pri- mary there on Tuesday, indicated that one issue was affirmative action, noting that the Supreme Court's Bakke decision has kept blacks and Hispanics from advancing. He offered no explanation. But turning to Israel, he said, "As we subsidize Is- rael, they are in fact selling arms to South Africa and they (the South Africans) are using those arms to shoot down and oppress black people there." He added that South Africa Art exhibit in Southfield also "sells diamonds to Is- rael that are being sold (by Israel) all over the world." However, Jackson stressed that blacks and Jews "have much more to gain by being together rather than being apart." In response to Jackson's remarks, Colorado Senator and Democratic President- ial Candidate Gary Hart, appearing on the same call- in show, said he too was op- posed to Israel selling arms to South Africa. "I certainly don't believe any arms coming from this country (the United States) to Israel, whether under grants or under sale, should make their way to South Af- rica.," Hart added. The candidate also voiced his opposition to the planned American sale of Stinger anti-aircraft mis- siles to Saudi Arabia or sophisticated weapon to other enemies of Israel. Former Vice President Walter Mondale, who also appeared on the program as a candidate for the Presidency, was not asked about either issue.
