THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS p LOCAL NEWS MA A'S 111 NJCRAC official visits Detroit to plead for Ethiopian Jewry Restaurant SERVING YOU FOR. 7 YEARS IN THE SAME WALNUT LAKE RD. LOCATION 2080 Walnut Lake Rd. at Inkster West Bloomfield Featuring BY HEIDI PRESS Local News Editor "If we unite, if the Ameri- can Jewish commmunity is together on the issue and supportive of Israel, and if the political conditions in the Horn of Africa remain as they have, then I'm op- timistic in five-seven years all Ethiopian Jews can be rescued." Barry Weise, director of the Ethiopian Jewry Desk of the National Jewish Community Relations • Advisory Council, made this prediction this week during a visit to Detroit sponsored by the Jewish Community Council. Weise is on a 15-city tour during which he hopes to educate American Jewish communities about the plight of Ethiopian Jews and about their history, cul- ture and religious tradi- tions. Weise estimated that there are about 20,000 Ethiopian Jews oppressed and living under poverty conditions in their native land. Weise said that in the mid-1970s about 200 Ethio- pian Jews were rescued and taken to Israel. Today, the Ethiopian Jewish refugees in Israel number 6,000. Comparing the plight of Ethiopian Jews with that of their Soviet counterparts, Weise said "this is one bright spot on the globe for Jews" adding that while fewer Soviet Jews are leav- ing Russia, more Ethiopian Jews are being rescued. Asked what American Jews can do for the Ethio- pian Jews, Weise recom- mended that American Jews petition their Con- gressmen, Senators and persons he called influen- tial members of Congress for famine relief •for Africa and especially for Ethiopia. Secondly, he suggested that U.S. Jews go to Ethiopia to visit their co-religionists. "The purpose of these vis- its is to give the Ethiopian Jews hope that they're not forgotten," he said. "Tourists are our only hope. It lets the (Ethiopian) government know we're very concerned." He also recommended that Ameri- can Jewish tourists who go to Israel visit the Ethiopian Jews who are in absorption centers. Israel has special absorp- tion programs for the Ethiopian Jews, aimed mainly at bringing them into the 20th Century. "They're technologically primitive," he said, adding that in Ethiopia they have, no electricity, appliances or other modern conveniences, but "socially, they're not primitive." Weise said that in Israel, Friday, June 1, 1984 .33 ORT provides technical training, Hadassah pro- vides medical care. Weise, who had worked for the World ORT Union in Ethiopia in 1977, said the Ethiopian Jews have a spe- .Superb Milk Fed Veal Fresh Seafood Daily Served in an authentic traditional New York Italian-style atmosphere cial interest in coming to Is- rael. "They want to come to Israel because they believe in messianic Judaism. They'll be successful in Is- rael because they want to be there.” Reservations Suggested For Your Convenience 851-2500 „..............................., $2°° OFF ANY $10 OR MORE FOOD PURCHASE .
