Minn. church
aids vandalized
synagogues

Minneapolis (JTA) —
Church neighbors of three
Minneapolis synagogues
whose "Save Soviet Jewry"
signs were smeared with
swastikas promptly offered
assistance, according to a
report by Marcy Steinberg
in the American Jewish
World.
The smeared synagogues
were B'nai Emet, Beth El
and Temple Israel. After the
defacing was reported, the
Greater Minneapolis Coun-
cil of Churches, in coopera-
tion with the Minneapolis-
St. Paul Human Rights Co-
alition, the Jewish Com-
munity Relations Council
(JCRC) and the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith of Minnesota and
North Dakota and South
Dakota, served as liaison
between the churches and
the synagogues.
Rev. Lawrence Dun-
newold and ten members of
his Congregational United
Church repainted the B'nai
Emet sign. The minister
said his congregation
wanted to help partly be-
cause "a holy place was de-
secrated" and partly be-
cause they wanted to
change people's ideas about
a gap between Christians
and Jews in the area.

Sharon claims
U.S. actions
shielded Syria

New York — Former Is-
raeli Defense Minister Ariel
Sharon Sunday blamed
American pressure in 1982
for the continued presence
of Syrian troops in Lebanon.
Sharon, appearing on a
New York television news
program, said that intense
American pressure halted
an Israeli army advance
that would have forced the
Syrians out of Lebanon dur-
ing the June 1982 Israeli
invasion.
"If we could have had just
a few more hours, (we)
would have cut the Syrian
army near the Lebanese-
Syria border and then that
would have brought the Sy-
rians to withdraw from
Lebanon," Sharon said on
WNBC-TV's News4orum.
Had Israel pushed on "it
could have been a real set-
back for the Soviets," Sha-
ron said.

Cable expansion

New York (JTA) — Two
federations — one in Miami
and one in New Jersey —
are expanding programs of
cable television, according
to the Council of Jewish
Federation.
