Sinai institutes
Chapnick lectures

Dr. Harry E. August will
present the first Esther E.
Chapnick Lecture at 8:30
a.m. Thursday at Sinai
Hospital of Detroit's Zuc-
kerman Auditorium.
The theme of the lecture-
r N\lip" made possible by a gift
'
fom Dr. Henry A. Chap-
nick, in memory of his wife,
is the effect of chronic ill-
ness on the functioning of
the family unit, particu-
larly on the emotional de-
velopment of children.
Dr. August will discuss
the importance of young
children's experience with
their parents in the early
years in helping to prevent
mental illness.
Mrs. Chapnick was a
school teacher and social
worker interested in Jewish
humanitarian causes, in-
cluding Soviet Jewry. She
was a lifetime member of
Hadassah.
Dr. Chapnick is currently
a physician in Sinai's
Shiffman Clinic and a
member of the emeritus
staff of the hospital. He
joined the hospital's active
staff in 1952. He was an
attending physician for the
North End Clinic, the
forerunner of Sinai Hospi-
tal, from 1935 to 1952.
Dr. Chapnick was a
member of the full-time
staff of Metropolitan Hospi-
tal and was vice chief of
medicine at Crittenton
General Hospital. He was
also a member of the Detroit
General Hospital staff and
on the faculty of the Wayne
State University School of
Medicine.
He earned his medical

degree from Wayne State
University School of
Medicine and did post-
graduate work at the Mayo
Clinic Foundation. He was
certified by the American
Board of Internal Medicine
and is a life fellow of the
American College of Physi-
cians.
Dr. August was a pioneer
in the development of psy-
chiatry and psychoanalysis
in Michigan. He organized
the psychiatric group at the
North End Clinic, which he
led from 1926 until the
clinic closed. Then he con-
tinued as chief of Sinai's
psychiatry division until
1961.
He organized Sinai's eve-
ning psychiatry clinic for
indigent patients, which
also served as a scientific
forum for the psychiatry di-
vision. Dr. August led ef-
forts that resulted in estab-.
lishing an in-patient
psychiatric unit and ap-
pointing a full-time chair-
man for psychiatry.
Dr. August is an emeritus
clinical professor at the
WSU School of Medicine.
He has served on the
staffs or as a consultant at

Detroit General Hospital,
the Wayne County Juvenile
Court Clinic, Merrill
Palmer Institute, the Chil-
dren's Center, the Veterans
Administration Mental
Hygiene Clinic, Lafayette
Clinic, and the Michigan
Psychoanalytic Institute.
He is now president
emeritus of the
Psychoanalytic Institute.
Dr. August served on the
Michigan State Mental
Health Commission for 10
years and is a past president
of the Michigan Society of
Neurology and Psychiatry
and the Michigan
Psychoanalytic Society.
He earned his medical
degree at the University of
Michigan Medical School.
The lecture is free and the
public is invited. Refresh-
ments will be served. For
