New York (JTA)
Thomas Dine, executive di-
rector of the American Is-
rael Public Affairs Commit-
tee (AIPAC), claimed here
last week that "Israel was
the engine that passed the
foreign aid bill" in the
House of Representa
The measure, adop
y
a close 211-206 vote e r ler
,this month was controver-
sial because it contained aid
for Central America, Dine
said in a briefing at the
office of the New York
Jewish Community Rela-
tions Council. Many Con-
gressmen supported the bill
because it also contained an
aid package for Israel, Dine
said.
He noted in that connec-
tion that 21 of the 31 Jewish
members of the House voted
in favor of the measure and
the 10 who voted against it
did so because of the con-
troversy over Central
America.
The foreign aid bill in-
cludes $2.5 billion in aid for
Israel in fiscal 1985, all of it
in grants. Dine noted that it
is the first time that the
entire aid package for Israel
is in the form of grants. It
includes $1.4 billion in mili-
tary aid and $1.1 billion in
economic aid.
Mail-order
Arab bias
London (JTA) — A lead-
ing British mail-order corn-
pany has issued profuse
apologies to its Arab cus-
tomers after accidentally
sending two Israeli-made
bras to Abu Dhabi on the
Persian Gulf.
The Freemans Interna-
tional Group issued the
apology after an angry cus-
tomer protested to a local
Abu Dhabi newspaper. In a
scathing attack on
Freemans, the newspaper,
Al-Ittihad, said. "It is very
clear they have played a
very dirty trick on us. We
demand an investigation to
find out the agent or the
people dealing with
Freemans, to take neces-
sary action."

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A J-
foot tunnel leading from the
Israeli-held Rafah on the
Mediterranean coast to the
Egyptian-held part of the
divided town has been found
by security forces.
The tunnel appears to
have been dug for the use of
smugglers. The Israel-
Egypt border runs through
the center of Rafah, and in
some cases through the
middle of houses. Rafah is at
the southern end of the
Gaza Strip.
