The pay is bad." They prefer the life of a doctor, lawyer or ar- chitect. Before the glory years of the 1950s and '60s, Jewish professors at uni- versities were few and far etween, kept out by anti- iitism and the lack of . The great expansion of higher education, and the removal of discriminatory barriers changed all that, and the proportion of Jewish professors in America reached previously undreamed-of heights. Will there soon be just as pre- cipitous a drop?Very few people 50 years ago could have foreseen the "explo- sion" of Jewish talent that would flood higher educa- tion. Are we now just as quickly headed in the other direction? Is the Jewish academic an endangered species? If so, should this be a matter of concern for the Jewish community. LETTERS Enemies of Israel The enemies of Israel are myriad. List the Arab and anti-Semitic organizers in the United States, the numerous media commen- tators, the editorial writers reflecting their publishers' bias, columnists (writing in such prestigious newspap- ers as the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe and Los Angeles Times) are a great threat. Anthony Lewis never ceases stabbing at Israel. When I criticized his denun- ciation of Israel's expulsion of an Arab mayor, he chal- lenged me to submit my evidence. I wrote, listing 13 viciously anti- Administration acts which warranted the expulsion. No further reply. Evans and Novak's hate-Israel poison is syndicated to 200 news- papers, some of which have published my refutation of their lies. No one excels David Ship- ler's insidious and damag- ing undermining of Israel's image and reputation, e.g., his false depiction of de- gradation of Sephardis by Ashkenazis. When I pointed out the unfairness and inac- curacies of his report, he wrote me insultingly that I was ignorant, unworthy of comment on my criticism. How about the enemies within: those American Jewish leaders, craving publicity, who arrogate judgment as to best policies for Israel to follow; fanatical Jews who excoriate Israel in 'bic ads; the pious who ac- caly prefer King Hussein to rule Israel until Messiah appears; the extremists, both religious and secular, violently hostile — even the political opposition to whom restoration to power seems to take priority. Add it up: a crippled economy, a "Munich" world gangup of powers to qualify for Arab big money, Israel be damned, apathetic American Jews (85 percent have never visited Israel even once). What a.stagger- ing burden, what a battle for sheer survival! The Holocaust is forgot- ten as a cynical and uncons- cionable world aids and abets the feverish prepara- tions for a Jihad, a Holy War, of extermination of de- spised infidels! Oh those pious promises of support for a small democracy, a loyal ally of the U.S.! New York New York (JTA) — A member of the Yesh G'vul (There is A Limit) move- ment in Israel, which con- sists of soldiers and reser- vists who have refused to serve in Lebanon, the movement will continue its activities, most likely against serving in the West Bank. Yaacov Shein of Tel Aviv said at a press conference here that the war in Leba- non was against the Pales- tinian people and "had nothing to to with peace for Galilee," as the Likud gov- ernment claimed. Shein also said that the situation in the West Bank "is worse than in Lebanon." He said that because the movement is concentrating its efforts now on Lebanon, it did not advocate refusal to serve in Israeli forces in the West, once the war in Leba- non is over. Shein arrived in the United States last Thurs- day for a six-week, cross- country speaking tour spon- sored by the American- Israeli Civil Liberties Coal- ition and the Jewish Peace Fellowship.
