. Rumsfeld post
remains vacant

Washington (JTA) — The
announcement by the
White House that President
Reagan will not replace
Donald Rumsfeld, who has
resigned as U.S. special
envoy to the Middle East,
was seen here as an indica-
tion that specific diplomatic
its by the Administra-
n the Arab-Israeli dis-
and the situation in
Lebanon have been sus-
pended, at least for the time
being.
Rumsfeld, who took the
assignment last November,
replacing special envoy
Robert McFarlane, submit-
ted his resignation to the
President on May 15, to re-
turn to private business.
Reagan promptly accepted
it, praising Rumsfeld for his
"invaluable" contributions
"during a critical period."
He made his last trip to the
region on March29.
White House Press
spokesman Larry Speakes
said rast Friday that Re-
agan will not appoint a new
special envoy to the Middle
East. That diplomatic as-
signment has not been vac-
ant since Reagan sum-
moned Philip Habib out of
retirement in May 1981.

Anti-Semitism
is criticized by
Scottish church

Glasgow (JTA) — The
Church of Scotland has
joined the Jewish Represen-
tative Council of Glasgow in
a strong condemnation of
anti-Semitism and an ac-
knowledgement that the
Christian church has been
guilty over the centuries of
fostering anti-Semitic atti-
tudes.
The joint statement also
affirmed the place of Zion in
Jewish theology as an ex-
pression of th fulfillment of
Biblical prophecy.
The statement was issued
after a series of discussions
between ministers of the
Church of Scotland and
leaders of the Jewish com-
munity who have been
meeting regularly since Oc-
tober 1982.

sued by JDL

( T ._)s Angeles — The
\ Nish Defense League has
filed a lawsuit against the
Los Angeles Police Depart-
ment, charging that ari

filtrated the militant group
and tried to incite violence.
The suit, filed last week
in Santa Monica Superior
Court, contends an officer
identified as Larry Winston
joined the JDL and
suggested the organization

Presidential campaign
headquarters.
