New York (JTA) — Val-
ery Pilnikov, a 46-year-old
Jewish engineer from Kiev,
has been released from a
Soviet labor camp after
serving four years of a five
year sentence for "malicious
hooliganism," the National
Conference on Soviet Jewry
reported Monday.
According to the NCSJ,
Pilnikov was released one
year early for "good be-
havior" and is back in Kiev.
He and his wife Olga have
been waiting since 1979 for
permission to emigrate to
Israel. They have a two-
year-old son.
Meanwhile, in Paris this
week, Jewish community
leaders from ten Western
European countries and Is-
rael agreed after a two-day
meeting o establish a
"European Committee for
the Defense of Soviet
Jewry" to counter what they
said "all objective factors"
show to be a "hardened"
Soviet policy toward Rus-
sian Jews in recent months.
Claude Kelman, vice
president of the Brussels
Conference on Soviet Jewry
told a press conference that
the Jewish leaders have
"definitely rejected a timid
approach" and conceded
that traditional "so-called
humanitarian gestures
have lost their efficacy."
The meeting decided to seek
a new strategy and adopt
new tactical measures.

Israeli-Kiribati
ties established

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
has established diplomatic
relations with Kiribati, a
new nation composed of 33
islands in the southwest
Pacific, with a population of
about 60,000.
The islands, part of the
Gilbert and Ellice group,
were a British protectorate
until five years ago when
they gained independence.
Israel's ambassador to Au-
stralia, Issachar Ben-
Yaacov, will be the non-
resident ambassador to the
island republic.

More converts

Northridge, Calif. (JTA)
— The number of American
gentiles who want to con
vert to Judaism has in-
creased dramatically dur-
ing the past 15 years, ac-
cording to Rabbi Henry
Fisher, who teaches a
course for converts at the
University of Judaism in
Los Angeles. The Conserva-
tive rabbi said his course ac-
commodates some, 200 per-
sons each year.
