THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS el DAYS ONLY SAT., SUN., MON.' ✓ MUFFIN I FT=F RESUITS Shultz: Mideast looks to U.S. as peacemaker Washington (JTA) — Secretary of State George Shultz has stressed again that despite the U.S. failure to achieve its goals in Leba- non, America is the only country that most people in the Middle East look to for 4p in seeking peace. When all is said and done, most of the people in the Middle East recognize that only the United States has the necessary respect and influence throughout the region to serve as an honest broker and a peace-maker," Shultz said in a speech before the busi- ness council in Hot Springs, Va. Saturday. "The important thing is that we continue to stand by our friends and resist the forces of state-sponsored terrorism" he continued. "If we do this, we will retain the trust of reasonable people on all sides while they sort out their positions regarding the next steps in the peace process." In a related development, the Reagan Administration indicated last week that it would not support any United Nations Security Council resolution calling for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon that did not include measures for safeguarding Israel's northern borders. Christian study group criticizes Passion Play New York (JTA) — The Israel Study Group, spon- sored by the National Con- ference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ), has declared its opposition to the 1984 Passion Play in Oberam- mergau, West Germany. The group of 22 Christian scholars who study Judaism and the Jewish people has sent a letter to the mayor of the Bavarian village and the director of the Passion Play protesting the con- tinuation of the structurally anti-Semitic drama. "The play continues to use the tradition of drama- tic anti-Judaism despite' some attempts at revision," said Fr. John J. Kelly, okesman for the group. POC degrees New York — Two Soviet Jewish Prisoners of Con- science will be awarded honorary degrees in absen- tia by universities in the coming weeks. Anatoly Shcharansky will be honored by Yeshiva University and Yosef Begun will be cited by the University of Haifa.
