Maas, a man- ufacturer's representative in the automobile industry, died May 13 at age 88. Born in New York, Mr. Maas lived 71 years in De- troit. He was a member of Temple Beth El and a life member of its board of gov- ernors. The Maas Chapel at Beth El was named in his honor "for his continuous support of the temple." He was a member of Per- fection Lodge of the Masons, Moslem Temple, Israel Bonds' Prime Minister's Club, Boys Scouts of America, Knollwood Coun- try Club, the 100 Club, the Society of Plastic Engineers, Society of Au- tomotive Engineers and P.B. Next to Stanley Steamer rz RA NAUMAN CHAPEL INC I Irwin Shaw, author dies New York — Author Irwin Shaw, whose book, Rich Man, Poor Man, was turned into a successful television mini-series, died May 16 in Davos, Switzer- land. He was 71. Mr. Shaw was the author of "The Young Lions," and nearly a dozen more. He began his writing career at Brooklyn College, where he wrote a column in the col- lege newspaper. He wrote several plays for the college dramatic society and dialogue for radio se- rials. After college, he wrote a play, Bury the Dead, and short stories. In 1936 he went to Hol- lywood and wrote his first screenplay, The Big Game.
