Tarnopolsky of Kharkov,
U.S.S.R.
Tarnopolsky, Olga and
Irina first applied for an exit
visa on Dec. 14, 1976, and
- received their first refusal
three years later. The pre-
text given for refusal being
insufficient relationship to
the person in Israel who
sent the original invitation.
Tarnopolsky is one of the
teachers in the "Kharkov
o University" which was
formed by a group of refus-
niks to provide further edu-
cation in science subjects for
children of refuseniks who

' entry at the state uni-
versities.
On Aug. 28, 1981, uni-
formed police raided Tar-
nopolsky home and confis-
cated books and papers. The
unofficial "university" was
, due to reopen on this day
and the KGB action was in-
o tended to terrify the Khar-
kov Jews and close the
"university." On June 30,
1983, Tarnopolsky was sen-
tenced to three years in
labor camps on charges of
"slandering the Soviet
I state."
