Dr. Celina Sokolow dies at 97

London (JTA) — Dr.
Celina Sokolow, daughter
and secretary of Nahum
Sokolow, one of the giants of
the Zionist movement, died
May 3 only a month before
her 98th birthday.
Born in Warsaw, she was
the fourth of seven children
of Mr. Sokolow, whose
Zionist activities as writer,
journalist and politician left
a deep imprint on her ear-
liest memories. Her elder-
sister Maria had accom-
panied their father to the
first Zionist Congress in
Basle in 1897.
A gifted artist, Dr.
Sokolow had initially
wished to be a painter. But
at her father's instigation,
she studied medicine, qual-
> ifying as a pediatrician in
Zurich, Switzerland. It was
from there, in the middle of
World War I, that she
moved to London to join her
parents, who had settled in
England in December 1914.
Until the war broke out,
Mr. Sokolow had been the
secretary general of the
World Zionist Organization
which had been based in Be-
rlin.
In addition to acting as
his secretary, Dr. 'Sokolow
was also his personal physi-
cian, administering the
daily injection of insulin re-
quired by his diabetes.
Apart from that she prac-
ticed medicine only sporadi-
cally, spending periods at
two London hospitals and
occasionally as a private
consultant.

Julius Michman,
Hebrew U. Prof

Jerusalem — Prof-.
Emeritus Julius Isaac
( Yr- man, one of the found-
> eL the Hebrew Univer-
sity - • Hadassah School of
• Dental Medicine, died April
19 at age 75.
Born in Nuremberg,
Germany, Prof. Michman
worked as a consultant at
the Hadassah - Hebrew
University Hospital Dental
Clinic from 1942 to 1955. He
then founded the oral re-
, habilitation clinic at the
Hebrew University -
Hadassah School of Dental
Medicine, which he headed
for the next 20 years. He
was appointed a senior lec-
turer in 1957 and became a
full professor in 1970.

Dr. Celina Sokolow

After her father's death in
1936 at age 76, she devoted
herself tirelessly to keeping
his memory alive, sup-
ported by her eldest brother
Florian. This was no simple
task, since her father, the
author of more than 30
books, left a vast literary es-
tate and private and politi-
cal archives filling the
house from top to bottom.
Dr. Sokolow always felt
that her father's contribu-
tion to Jewish life and let-
ters had been given insuffi-
cient recognition by the

leaders of modern Israel.
After much persuasion she
finally permitted his papers
to be transferred to the
Zionist archives in
Jerusalem. But the State of
Israel has yet to honor her
request that they should be
housed in a special building
facing the Knesset. in
Jerusalem.
She was also disappointed
that her father's Hebrew
dictionary, conceived on the
scale of the Grande
Larousse, had never been
completed by others, and
that his Hebrew biography
of the Jewish philosopher
Baruch Spinoza had not
been translated into
English, as David Ben-
Gurion had once suggested
to her.
Her final satisfaction,
though, came a year ago
when hundreds of people
came to her house to witness
the unveiling of a plaque
commemorating its historic
connection with her late
father. Today that house is a
monument not only to a
great father but to a faithful
daughter who made her own
immeasurable contribution
and sacrifices to the Zionist
cause.
