CHAIM HENDIN, currently living in Israel, is internation-
ally acknowledged as one of the most skilled and
dynamic sculptors of our century, and his works have
been exhibited throughout Europe and America. Hendin
was born in Riga, Latvia in 1920 and graduated from the
art academy there. A soldier in the Russian army from
1940 to 1945, he returned to his work after the war and
achieved major critical and official recognition for his
work. He was selected to make statues honoring Stalin
on his birthday, and given the privilege of making a
memorial monument in commemoration of the unknown
soldier in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. In the 1960s he
was chosen to do sculptures and copper ornamentation
in the Kremlin. Despite his many brilliant successes, a
time came when both artistic and personal freedom
compelled Hendin to leave the Soviet Union. Emigrating
to Israel in 1965 he has established an international
reputation as a metal sculptor who expresses both uni-
versal and Jewish themes with equal force.

Jerusalem — Israeli ties
with Lebanon are still solid
despite the abrogation of
the May 17, 1983 accord
signed by the two countries,
according to David Kimche,
director-general of the Is-
rael Ministry of Foreign Af-
fairs.
"What you hear about
Lebanon is usually the op-
posite of the truth," Kimche
told a meeting of the West
Coast Friends of Hebrew
University here earlier this
spring. "There is no cut in
our relations with the
Lebanese despite the
(scrapping) of the treaty."
The support group was in
Jerusalem in conjunction
with the annual meeting of
the university's Board of
Governors and for the dedi-
cation of the school's
Emanuel Streisand Build-
ing for Jewish Studies,
named in memory of
entertainer Barbra
Streisand's father.
