Sterling performances by others many times can overshadow the bleakness of those whose talents are not meant for audience con- sumption. However, every so often, there comes a play in which this is not possible . . . be- cause the focus must be sol- ely on a minute amount of participants. Such is the case in "I Do! I Do!" at John Anhut's his- toric Botsford Inn on Grand River and Eight Mile . . . a Nancy Gurwin Production. Din. 4 to 2 a.m. - 851 -7400, Robert Preston, rests solely in the hands of two people . . . because that is all the case is made of . . . And so, casting is extremely impor- tant . . . else choose another vehicle. Nancy Gurwin and Phil Marcus Esser are poignant examples of proper selection . . . They blend together in "I Do! I Do!" with Mixmas- ter dexterity . . . playing their roles to the essence of perfection. This is nothing new for them . . . Back in 1976, when Nancy formed her own dinner theater produc- tion company, she selected "I Do! I Do!" as its first offer- ing . . . Nancy obtained Phil Marcus Esser to be her co- star and Edgar A. Guest III as director . . . The show opened in January 1977 at the same Botsford Inn .. . and for a run of eight months. They are together again in the present production of "I Do! I Do!" . . . and the audiences are treated to what probably can be classed as the best of them all ... including Nancy's three-month run at Paradiso Dinner Theater on Woodward and nine months at Mama Mia in Union Lake. Seven years after their initial togetherness in what has proven to be this area's longest and most succe sful musical, Nancy and Phil are again weaving their lines with masterful touches that complement a succinct rap- port between the two. Martin Mandelbaum is musical director . . . and Deborah DeCeco choreog- rapher. "I Do! I Do!" was written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt . . . a warm, comic and tuneful journey through 50 years of mar- riage. It was opening night .. . and a new look at old Botsford . . . A very professional-looking set which oddly has to be re- moved after every perform- ance, is at an end of the room. instead of a center wall . . . The food has taken on a complete reversal in variety and tastiness .. . with the pasta, salad and other throw-togethers done away with. Replacing the fare which performers had to over- come, are now things like seafood Newburg over patty shell, both fruit and vegeta- ble salads with wide selec- tions, curried chicken over rice, Swedish meatballs on Thursdays, roast beef on Sundays. It is just after the turn of the century . . . Opening scene has Nancy and Phil in back of room wearing bride and groom garb singing "I Do! I Do!," then walking to the front and vocalizing on "Together Forever" . . . then back to "I Do!" as they walk around greeting people of the audieh'ce as reception s attendees . . . throwing gar- ter and bouquet . . . Then to the large set with 11 theat- rical ceiling lights overhead and long, heavy spotlight beaming on Nancy and Phil. So much poise and pre- sentation by this veteran couple, each ideally suited for musical comedy . . . and a choice pair for this musi cal. It's their honeymoon night . . . Nancy, as Agnes, is wearing her veil to bed, and Phil, as Michael, has on a long nightshirt and long, pointed head covering .. . Phil gets out of bed and sings "I Love My Wife" in upbeat tempo . . . In fact, both get out of bed and dance around the room, even tap dancing, as Nancy ad libs, "Eat your heart out, Ginger." This is very light musical comedy . . . entertaining .. . and done exceedingly well. Agnes gets pregnant and comes on stage singing, "Something Has Happened" ... -Both think Michael has gotten her labor pains, but she eventually gets them . . . Nancy sings, "My Cup Runneth Over" and then Phil joins her. Michael comes out into the audience passing out cigars as a baby boy is born . . . Agnes hangs diapers and sings, :Love Isn't Ev- erything" . . . and Michael comes home with toys ga- lore . . . Then she gets pre- ganant again and it's a girl . . . Michael sings "Love Isn't Everything" and she brings home dolls. After years of marriage, both have lists of com- plaints about the other to read in song . . . They take pot shots at each other and turns at "Nobody's Perfect" . . . This tune is the real Nancy . . . She shines .. . and Phil does a superb job of reality . . . It's a little spot, but probably one of the show's best scenes. Then, after 12 years of marriage, Michael tells Agnes he loves someone else . . . Phil does a top hat and cane number that shows his prowess as a singer, actor and dancer . . . in "It's A Well-Known Fact." Nancy is great in "Flam- ing Agnes" . . . with feath- ered hat and scarf she has saved . . . singing accom- panied by body shakes and --- bumps . . . It's an excellen number for her . . . bringing out so much of that musical comedy vigor and expertise she is so noted for . . . Nan- cy's terrific number brings much applause from the audience. Then Agnes packs up to leave as they do a duet on "The Honeymoon Is Over." During intermission, a bowling banquet was going on with trophies being given out . . . Nancy and Phil certainly should re- ceive top trophies for their performances. Second act opens with both bldwing balloons in
