Mortgage burning, forum
among B'nai David events

Cong. B'nai David will
hold a mortgage-burning
ceremony at a dinner-dance
to be held on May 20 at 6:30
p.m. in the Julius Roten-
berg Hall of the Synagogue.
A mortgage redemption
campaign has been con-
ducted for the past two
years. Major contributors to
this campaign have been
honored with stained glass
windows depicting the 12
tribes of Israel now on per-
manent display in the
synagogue's foyer.
Participants in the eve-
ning's events are synagogue
President Jerome Soble,
chairman Phil Bolton, co-
chairmen Helen Brown,
Mel Richman and Max So-
sin, and the B'nai David
clergy.
Cong. B'nai David was
founded on May 9, 1892, by
11 Jews of Russian origin
and this month celebrates
its 94th anniversary of serv-
ice to Detroit Jewry. It has
been popularly known as
the "Russische Shul"
throughout its long history.

Its first building was lo-
cated on Gratiot and Hast-
ings streets and it was fol-
lowed by structures on
Adelaide Street (1900),
Winder Street (1915), Owen
Ave. (1924) and on El-
mhurst and 14th Streets
from 1928 to 1958. The syn-
agogue relocated to its pre-
sent site on Southfield Rd.
in 1958 and its 1,000-seat
sanctuary was dedicated on
Chanukah 1966.
Max Sosin, past president
of the congregation, and
Philip Bolton, president-
elect, have been appointed
co-chairman for the
mortgage-burning dinner.

Michigan State Rep.
Maxine Berman will speak
on "Campaign '84: Implica-
tions for the Jewish Corn-
munity" at B'nai David.
Rep. Berman will appear
for the annual Spring

Forum sponsored by the
Cultural Commission.
A continental breakfast
will be served at 10:15 a.m.
The public is invited free of
charge.

Coin replaces
S100 banknote

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
100 Shekel banknote, bear-
ing a portrait of Zeev
Jabotinsky, the founder of
the Zionist Revisionist
movement, has been re-
placed by a coin of the same
denomination. It is worth
about 55 cents at the cur-
rent rate of exchange.
The new coin, 75 percent
copper and 25 percent nic-
kel, is stamped with the rep-
lica of a coin of the H asmo-
nean era on one side and the
denomination on the other.
The coins are minted in
Jerusalem and by the Royal
Mint of Canada.
