Dr. Zvi Gitelman

Dr. Zvi Y. Gitelman, pro-
fessor of political science at
the University of Michigan
and a nationally-recognized
expert on Soviet Jewry, will
be the Rabbi Moses
Lehrman Memorial
Scholar-in-Residence at
Cong. B'nai Moshe May
19-20.
Dr. Gitelman will deliver
three lectures on Soviet and
Eastern European Jewry
during the weekend.

At Sabbath morning serv-
ices May 19 he will discuss
"The Current Crisis." Be-
tween Minchah and Maariv
services that evening he
will lecture on "Reform,
Revolution and Reaction."
Shalosh seudah will be
served.
At 9:30 a.m. May 20, a
continental breakfast will
be served. at 10 a.m., Dr.
Gitelman will present an
illustrated slide lecture on
"The Jewish Remnant in
Eastern Europe Today." All
three events are free and
open to the public.
Dr. Gitelman has written
three books-and more than
40 articles on Soviet and
Eastern European com-
munities and politics.
A graduate of Columbia
University and the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America, he also holds mas-
ter's and doctorate degrees
from Columbia.
He was an associate in
government at Columbia
and has held several visit-
ing appointments at the
YIVO Institute for Jewish
Research in New York and
at Tel Aviv University. He
served as director of the
Center for Russian and
Eastern European Studies
at the University of Michi-
gan from 1980 to 1983. He
speaks six languages.
Dr. Gitelman is active
with the YIVO Institute,
the Memorial Foundation
for Jewish Culture, the
B'nai B'rith Hillel Commis-
sion and the Synagogue
Council of America. He is a
member of the board of
Akiva Hebrew Day School
in Southfield.
