Marshall Fields and Toys
R Us."
Every comedian has
something to say in an elec-
tion year, and she was no
exception. "An election,
that's legalized gambling."
On the state of the
economy, she said even the
rich have it bad. "In New
York, I saw Jackie 0 (Onas-
sis) in the gourmet food sec-
tion looking for generic
brand truffles."
Mrs. Toppel began her
comedy career by sending a
gag to comedienne Phyllis
Diller. She heard the com-
edienne say that she got a
lot of her material from
housewives. Hearing this,
Mrs. Toppel sent in a joke,
and when she received a
check some weeks later, she
knew she had stumbled onto
something good.
Since that one joke, Mrs.
Toppel has done much more
writing for Ms. Diller, as
well as for the late Jack E.
Leonard, Rich Little, im-
prissionist Fred Travalena,
Bob Hope and Red Buttons.
She recently wrote for two
Dean Martin "roasts."
Asked if she is involved it
any TV projects, she said
she devoted most of her time
to the talks that she delivers
throughout the country.
Her humor is light, funny
because it pokes fun at the
trials and tribulations of
daily living, and best of all
it's clean. She was critical of
comedians and comedien-
nes who make jokes out of
people's misfortunes,
illnesses, or who pick. on
"the little guy." She was
especially critical of her
peers who choose to be dirty
in their comedy routines.
So, take Leona Toppel,
please, and enjoy.

Recall of TV license asked
for station accused of bias
New York (JTA) —
Americans for a Safe Israel
(AFSI), charging that
WNBC-TV presented dis-
torted and one-sided cover-
age of the war in Lebanon,
and therefore violated the
Fairness Doctrine, said that
it had filed a petition with
the- Federal Communica-
tions Commission (FCC) to
deny renewal of the sta-
tion's broadcast license.
At a news conference at
Freedom House, Peter
Goldman, director of AFSI,
said the group also filed pet-
itions against seven other
New York state NBC af-
filiate stations.
AFSI contends that
during 600 minutes of re-
porting on the Lebanese
conflict between June 4,
1982, and Aug. 31, 1982, by
NBC Nightly News, Less
than 30 minutes were de-
voted to airing Israeli
perspectives, factual back-
ground information or ob-
jective points of view. Most
of the rest, according to
AFSI, was presented from
the Arab viewpoint.
In a 100-page brief filed
with the FCC. AFSI also
charged NBC and WNBC
with "purposeful" falsifica-
tion of facts, biased report-
ing and editorializing,
selective and tendentious
interviewing techniques
and biased terminology.
AFSI accused NBC of vir-
tually ignoring the PLO's
brutal occupation of Leba-
non and its terrorist activi-
ties, and presenting the
PLO in a favorable manner
while denigrating Israel
and its leaders.
The filing against New
York state NBC affiliates
comes on the heels of simi-
lar action by AFSI against
the New England affiliates
of the same network. AFSI
filed these petitions March
1, and they are currently
being considered by the
FCC. The new petition has
been re-written and
enlai-ged, listing additional
acts of bias by the network.
A portion of this docu-
ment includes testimony
from Lebanese civilians
who live in PLO-controlled
areas and spoke of the terri-
ble treatment they were
subjected to by the PLO.
Elutcher fined
under NJ
fraud statute
New York (JTA) — The
first major violation of a
New Jersey law, which
makes it a fraud to mislead
observant consumers by
selling or offering to sell or
serve as kosher non-kosher
foods, has been reported by
the New Jersey Division of
Consumer Affairs.
The offense involved the
Allgood Kosher Meat and
Poultry Market of Clifton,
N.J. whose partners signed
an administrative action
consent order
421 violations of the C
sumer Fraud Act, after --a
routine inspection by the
kosher foods inspection unit
of the division. In the con-
sent order, filed April 25,
the Clifton store agreed to
pay a $3,000 penalty and to
pay the state $500 for its
costs of investigation and
prosecution.
The store owners admit-
ted the possession of 280
non-kosher chickens; 100
non-kosher chickenbreasts,
35 non-kosher turkeys,
three packages of non-
kosher beef liver; and three
containers of non-kosher
chicken liver.
