(JTA) — A total of 144 crates of docu- ments from the Nuremberg Tribunals on Nazi war crim- inals, which had been gathering dust since the late 1940s in the basement of the State Cultural Educa- tion Center here, was re- cently discovered. Preliminary investiga- tions have established that the documents are one of some 20 mimeographed sets now houses in libraries, documentation centers and universities in the United States and Europe, accord- ing to Martin Sullivan, the State Education Depart- ment's assistant commis- sioner for State Museum Science and Historical Serv- ices. The documents here con- sist of 12 trial manuscripts of major war criminals. Included are minutes books, official court files, order and judgement books, clemency petitions, pros- Dallas (JTA) — The nag- ging issue of Rev. Jesse Jackson's refusal to re- pudiate the support of Black Muslim leader Louis Far- rakhan continued to bedevil the debates between the three Democratic Presidential aspirants last week. In the latest round, na- tionally televised from Grapevine, Tex., former Vice President Walter Mondale and Sen. Gary Hart of Colorado took Jackson sharply to task for his equivocal position on Farrakhan who threatened the life of black reporter Milton Coleman for reveal- ing anti-Semitic remarks by Jackson and who, on an- other occasion, referred to Hitler as a "great man." The presence of the mate- rial in the basement of the cultural education center for the past 40 years re- mains somewhat of a mys- tery. One theory is that one of the Nuremberg trial jurists was from Albany and had the crates shipped to the education center for safe-keeping and future reference. Recently, in an effort to clear up the clutter of stored material in the basement, the crates were discovered and opened by a custodial worker who re- ported its contents. Jackson referred to New Testament scriptural sources to justify his posi- tion. Last week, Jackson re- jected as a "political diver- sion" a request by the U.S. Civil Rights Commission to repudiate Farrakhan. The request came after President Reagan issued a letter, also at the commis- sion's behest, disassociating himself from the Ku Klux Klan and declaring that it and other hate groups have no place in American politi- cal life. Centenary of Truman birth recognized by Jewish state New York (JTA) — Yehuda Blum, Israel's am- bassador to the United Na- tions, represented Israel Monday at the ceremony marking the 100th anniver- sary of birth of President Harry Truman. The cere- mony, attended by foreign diplomats and U.S. officials was held at Leawood, Kan- sas. Blum read greetings from Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir who noted that Is- rael celebrated its 36th an- niversary this week when the 100th birthday of Tru- man, the 33rd president of the U.S. is celebrated. "For us in Israel these two events are inevitably linked, for Harry Truman was the first world leader to grant recognition to the newly born Jewish state on May 14, 1948," Shamir's message said.
