Zuckerman arranges film event
in Houston for Israeli retarded
Friends of AKIM U.S.A.
will host a national film
premiere in Houston on
May 20 to benefit the organ-
ization for rehabilitating
mentally retarded in Is-
'
Detroiter Paul Zucker-
man, national president of
Friends of AKIM, was in-
strumental in arranging for
the film premiere of "For
Those I Loved," based on the
best-selling book about
Holocaust survivor Martin
Gray who lost 117 relatives
in the Holocaust and his
wife and four children in a
1970 French forest fire.
Zuckerman met Gray in
the 1960s when Gray was
operating an antique store
in New York. Gray had sur-
vived the destruction of the
Warsaw Ghetto, the Treb-
linka death camp, and had
Paul Zuckerman
served briefly with the
Soviet Army in Berlin at the
end of World War II.
The loss of his family in
the forest fire near Cannes
nearly drove Gray to
suicide. He ultimately
wrote his international
best-seller, "For Those I

performance of 'Hearts and Flowers."
Loved," about his experi-
ences.
Last October, while in
Paris, Zuckerman called
Gray and re-established
their friendship. Gray
agreed to allow the film to
be used as a benefit for
AKIM and will meet Zuc-
kerman again at the Hous-
ton premiere.
AKIM operates 50
facilities throughout Israel.
They include schools, day
care centers, hostels, shel-
tered workshops, commu-
nity centers, camps, social
clubs and athletic facilities.
Last summer, Zuckerman
helped raise funds for
AKIM to send eight athletes
to the international Special
Olympics in Baton Rouge,
La. On May 23-26, a group
of 13 AKIM singers, dancers
and musicians will present
"Hearts and Flowers" at the
Kennedy Center for the Per-
forming Arts in Washing-
ton, D.C. as part of the Very
Special Arts Festival.
