34 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, May 4, 1984 FOLLOW-UP 14 Kt. GOLD AND DIAMOND BRACELETS The virus of hate BY DON McEVOY I recently wrote about the appearance in Memphis of anti-Catholic posters, plas- tered on walls and windows of empty buildings. Following that column, I received a letter with a Van Nuys, Calif. postmark, tak- ing me to task. The writer did not sign his name, but did indicate an affiliation with the Jews for Jesus. He suggested that the whole thing was "as queer as a three dollar bill . . . and was probably done by the Jews," presumably to divert the American public from the real truth" that they were the ones who controlled the media and were plotting to use it for world domination. Enclosed with his letter were a series of pamphlets which the writer said "should open your blinded eyes and closed mind, but I doubt it." The stuff he sent was one of the worst collections of anti-Semitic garbage that I have ever seen. The pam- phlets were printed and dis- tributed by such outfits as the Christian Nationalist Crusade, Los Angeles; Lord's Covenant Church, Phoenix; Western Front, Hollywood, Calif.; and a couple of others which had the identification blacked out. I wish I could laugh about it, but I cannot. On the one hand it is rather nice to know that the professional bigots and peddlers of prej- udice are squabbling among themselves. But on the other hand, to know that they are still around pollut- ing the atmosphere is dis- tt For Mothers Day and everyday. Astrein Jewelers presents THREE NEW 14 kt. The presence of these kinds of anti-social atti- tudes, circulating in the mails, on placards and on the airwaves, is as danger- ous to the health of oliv society as the free-float: virus of any deadly diseat, The people who circulate this kind of hate are as threatening to our health as the carriers of typhoid or the bubonic plague in earlier eras. What to do about them is beyond me. I do not claim to know what is right in oppos- ing them. But I sure do rec- ognize the bad when I see it. And this is demonic. National Conference of Christians and Jews U.S. rejects Benvenisti , views on WB Washington (JTA) — The State Departinent rejected last week the view of former Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Meron Benvenisti that Is- rael's occupation of the West Bank is nearly ir- reversable. "We do not believe it is too late for a negotiated resolu- tion of the conflict based on Israel's return of territory in exchange for a just and durable peace," the depart- ment said. The State Department said that it was aware of Benvenisti's views which he had discussed with De- partment officials several times. .
