Friday, May 4, 1984 33 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ZOEY'S THE GIFT PEOPLE GLASS, BRASS & UNIQUE ART `Cold peace' Israel's fault, general says Jerusalem (JTA) — A re- tired Israeli general who has been involved in the military aspects of negotia- tions with Egypt since 1974, as blamed Israel in large easure for the "cold peace" that currently exists with Cairo. "Both Israel and Egypt committed a series of politi- cal mistakes since the peace agreement ( of 1979) and no party can blame the other for full responsibility," ac- cording to Brig. Gen. (Res.) Avraham Tamir in an arti- cle published in Yediot Ac- hronot last Thursday on the occasion of the second an- niversary of the Israeli evacuation of Sinai. But Tamir, who quit the army last week to join the new Yahad Party headedby former Defense Minister Ezer Weizman, appeared to put the lion's share of the blame on the Israeli gov- ernment. The basic mistake of Israel is that it did not use the peace treaty with Egypt as a tool to continue the peace process, he wrote. Tamir contended that even at the time of the fun- eral of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, Israel had backed off on some issues with Egypt that it had prev- iously agreed to. Israel could have reached agree- ment on autonomy for the West Bank without corn- promising its security, he maintained. U.S. Rep hits criticism of aid to Israel Boston (JTA) — Both cri- tics and supporters of U.S. aid to Israel were taken to task here last week by Rep. Sam Gejdenson (D-Conn.), addressing the 1984 bi- ennial convention of the JWB at Fanevil Hall here. Speaking to nearly 1,000 Jewish communal leaders from throughout the U.S., Canada, Israel, Argentina, Belgium ana England, Rep. Gejdenson, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said, "There are ose who say that the U.S. yes too much aid to Israel. ut in fact, we give far less to Israel than we give to democracies in Western Europe and throughout the world." He criticized Jewish communal leaders as being unable to "articulate an ef- fective argument on behalf of Israel" and some of them for "believing the other side." He also castigated Congressmen who "haven't done their homework" and who do not know how to an- swer critics of aid to Israel.
