U.S. pushes
for Lebanon
withdrawal

STAINED GLASS SUPPLIES

MOTHER'S DAY

Washington (JTA) — The
State Department reiter-
ated last week that the
United States wants Syria
and Israel to withdraw their
troops from Lebanon, re-
gardless of any dispute on
'w they got there.
Our long-standing policy
is that all foreign forces
should leave Lebanon with-
out regard to the circum-
stances of their entry,"
State Department deputy
spokesman Alan Romberg
said.
His comments were made
in response to a question
about Israel's reported re-
quest to the State Depart-
ment for clarifications
about a statement made by
Richard Murphy, Assistant
Secretary of State for Near
Eastern and South Asian
Affairs, during a recent
visit to Kuwait. Murphy
was reported in the Arab
press as saying that Syria
was invited into Lebanon in
1976 but the Israelis in-
vaded the country in 1982.
Responding to the State
Department edict, David
Kimche, director-general
of the Israel Foreign Minis-
try, maintained that Israel
cannot leave south Lebanon
until it is certain not only of
the security of its northern
border but of the safety of
the people living in south
Lebanon.
Kimche, in a talk at the
American Enterprise Insti-
tute(AEI) in Washington
last Friday, stressed that
those who call for Israel to
withdraw now do not take
into account that such a
withdrawal could endanger
the 50,000-70,000 Chris-
tians in south Lebanon as
well as the thousands of
Palestinians in the refugee
camps near Sidon.
"If we were just to get out
and leave without anybody=
taking over I believe there
would be very, very great
danger of acts of massacre
on a very large scale against
those two communities," he
said.
