Rights unit nudges Reagan
on endorsement by the Klan

Washington (JTA) —
President Reagan disasso-
ciated himself this week
from the Ku Klux Klan, dec-
laring that they and other
hate groups have no place in
American political life. But
the U.S. Commission on
Rights called on Re-
im to directly repudiate
ne endorsement of his can-
didacy by the Ku Klux Klan
and for the Rev. Jesse
Jackson to reject the sup-
port of Bldck Muslim leader
Louis Farrakhan.
The commission made
these statements after its
vice chairman, Morris Ab-

PLO claims
Jackson's
support

Boston (JTA) — The
Palestine Liberation
Organization claims Rev.
Jesse Jackson as its suppor-
ter. Dr. Riyad Mansour, De-
puty Observer for the PLO
at the United Nations,
referred to the
Democratic Presidential
hopeful as "that great can-
didate," stating that "that
candidate supports the
PLO."
Mansour was speaking at
a "teach-in" on Palestinian
rights last week hosted by
the Harvard Law School
Third World Coalition and
the Black Law Students
Association. The discussion
centered on the premise
that there is growing sup-
port for the PLO in the
United States.
Mansour Maintained that
evidence of this was to be
found in Jackson's "suc-
cesses" in the Democratic
primaries.

ram, read a letter from Re-
agan saying the President
has "no tolerance for what
the Klan represents and
would have nothing to do
with any group of that
type."

Abram noted that Mary
Berry, a member of the
commission, brought to the
attention of the commission
an April 17 news story in
which neither White House
spokesman Larry Speakes
nor the Reagan-Bush re-
election committee head-
quarters would comment on
the endorsement of Reagan
by Imperial Wizard Bill
Wilkinson, leader of the
Louisiana-based Knights of
the Ku Klux Klan. At a
Georgia rally April 14, Wil-
kinson told Klan leaders
that the Administration
shares some of the same be-
liefs as the Klan and the
Republican Party platform
"is pure Klan."
