Aelita will entertain at the community-wide Israel
Independence Day celebration at main Jewish Community
Center on May 12.

The
third
annual
community-wide Israel In-
dependence Day party,
marking Israel's 36th an-
niversary, will take place on
May 12 at 9 p.m. at the main
Jewish Community Center.
The event, which is open
to the community, is co-
sponsored by the Israeli
Community of Detroit,
Children of Holocaust Sur-
vivors Association in
Michigan, Young Adult Di-
vision of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, Young Leader-
ship of United Jewish Ap-
peal and the Community
Network for Jewish Singles.
Aelita, internationally -
known singing star and her
troupe of singers and dan-
cers, will present a show
consisting of international
and Israeli songs at 9:30
p.m. Refreshments and
music for dancing will fol-
low. •
The steering committee
planning the event includes
Yaffa Shevach of the Israeli
Community of Detroit;
Howard Tapper of the
Young Leadership; Florie
SchwaStz, Jodie Jacobs and
Marla Rogers of the Young
Adult Division; Eva Kraus
and Sherri Lipson Weisberg
of CHAIM; and Linda
Levine, Harley Berger and
Gail Reichstein of the
CNJS.
Advance tickets are
available at a discount at
the Israel Information and
Resource Center or the Cen-
ter cashier's office. Patron
tickets 'also are -available,
and those names will ap-
pear on a printed program.

The party will kick off De-
troit's celebration of Israel's
36th, double chai, Indepen-
dence Day. The celebration
will be held on May 20 at the
main Jewish Center. The

theme for the day is, "Say
Yes to Israel."
Booths will be open from
9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This
year's booth chairmen, Bob
Shapiro and David Gubow,
have said there will be a
wide variety of Israeli mer-
chants displaying and sell-
ing their goods. Among the
trade exhibits from Israel
will be: telephone equip-
ment, greeting cards,
Theepskin coats, flowers,
eyeglass frames, Natanya
diamond industry, Dead
Sea mud-facial masks,
stamps and coins, swim-
wear by Gottex, Aviva and
Gideon Oberson.
El Al will have a booth
and the Jerusalem Post will
be flown in for the day.
There also will be a fashion
show. Five art galleries will
display works of Israeli ar-
tists and Israeli themes.
Numerous food items from
Israel also will be sold.
During the day the movie
Exodus will be shown.
There will be no charge.
The main program of the
day will begin at 1:30 in the
gym and will feature Lt.
Gov. Martha Griffiths as
the keynote speaker. Gadi
Elon, Israeli vocalist, will
entertain.
Special programming
will be available for
younger children. This will
include games, a magician,
arts and crafts and more.
A poster contest is open to
children in first through
ninth grades. The posters
will be displayed at the Cen-
ter on May 20.
In conjunction with this
year's celebration will be
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion Walk-a-Thon. The
walk-a-thon will begin at 9
a.m. at Hechtman Federa-
tion Apts. in West Bloom-
field.
