COMPLAISANT

Music Study concert nears

Ned Rorem, a world re-
nowned and internationally
acclaimed composer and
author, was commissioned
by Music Study Club of
Metropolitan Detroit to
write an original work for
piano and cello. His work,
"Dances," a suite in seven
movements, will be pre-
miered at the 60th anniver-
sary Annual Artists Con-
cert of Music Study Club
May 6 at 3 p.m. at Orchestra
Hall.
Rorem won a Pulitzer
Prize for composition and
has composed three sym-
phonies, five operas and
hundreds of songs and cy-
cles. He also is the author of
eight books, including four
volumes of diaries, and a
collection of lectures called
"Music From Inside Out."
Rorem received the
George Gershwin Memorial
Prize in Composition, the
1951 Fulbright Fellowship,
a Guggenheim Fellowship
(1957) and an award from
the National Institute of
Arts and Letters. His or-
chestra pieces have been in-
ternationally performed by
such conductors as Berns-
tein, Mehta, Mitropoulos,
Ormandy and Stokowski.
