Probus Club cites 2 academics

scientists which gained na-
tional attention for its re-
search in the,field of cancer.
This included the study of
Nafazatrom, a new drug
which has stopped the
growth and spread of
malignant tumors in test
animals.
A member of the WSU fa-
culty since 1980, Dr. Sloane
holds B.S. and M.A. degrees
from Duke University and a
Ph.D. degree from Rutgers
University. Prior to joining
WSU, Dr. Sloane served on
the faculties at the Univer-
sity of Pennsylvania and
Michigan State University.
Dr. Sloane is a member of
the American Physiological
Society, American Society
for Cell Biology, American
Association for Cancer Re-
search and the American
Association for the Ad-
vancement of Science.
Dr. Whall has established
a reputation — locally and
nationally — for her re-.
search work in Alzheimer's
Disease and other illnesses
related to the mental health
of the aged. She was one of
only four nursing scholars
in the nation to receive a
Faculty Development
Award from the National
Institute of Mental Health
for post-doctoral study and
Dr. Bonnie Sloane
the first nurse to receive re-
search support from the
Dr. Sloane has conducted Michigan Department of
extensive research into the Health.
A member of the WSU

the fields of the humanities
and natural sciences, offer

lege, Kirschner also re-
ceived a master's degree
from Harvard University in
1952 and a doctorate from
the University of Illinois-
Urbana in 1954.

coming to WSU, she in-
itiated anew public health
nursing program for under-
graduate students at
Madonna College and also
served as an instructor in
the program.
Dr. Whall is a member of
the Council of Nurse Re-
searchers, American
Nurses Association, Mid-
west Nurse Research
Society and the Gerontology
Society.
The Probus Club, which is
granting the awards, is an
organization of Jewish pro-
fessional businessmen, es-
tablished in 1939.
In addition to the annual
WSU awards, initiated to
bring recognition to the
achievements of younger
faculty, the club contributes
gifts and grants to indi-
vidual Detroit hospitals and
charities. The club has also
provided financial assis-
tance for the college educa-
tion of more than 100 stu-
dents.
