WHAT WOULD MAKE
Nate Fink, former president
of Great Scott! Super Mar-
kets, come out of retire-
ment? . . . It had to be some-
thing very exciting and in-
teresting.
A new free-standing
building . . . about 4,400
square feet . . . sitting on
Woodward between 12 and
13 Mile Roads in Royal Oak
. . . called Mr. Bulky . . . is
the reason why.
This is where Shirley
Fink buys the ingredients
for her well-known choco-
late hazelnut sponge cake
. . . Hubby Nate, and Marty
Benson, traveled around
the country looking at var-
ious bulk food stores . . . and
came up with what they
consider a unique type of
operation.
Marty is a pharmacist and

ex-distributor of Slimmery
products with much back-
ground to help select items
for the store . . . Because of
Nate's buying power and
expertise, the two are able
to purchase and sell so low
. , . spending endless hours
finding things to offer in
bulk . . . Nate and brother
Sam built the Great Scott!
Super Markets into a 5'7-
store chain.
Marty's wife, Sandy Be-
nson, is a valuable asset, too
. . . She understands recipes
and helps out with the buy-
ing . . . Also soon will be a
bunch of Shirley's secret re-
cipes for customers to grab.
There are over 1,000
items at the very clean Mr.
Bulky . . . in plastic cases
galore . . . each with a sepa-
rate aluminum scooper .. .
24 tubs are also filled with
Crackerjack, cheese puffs,
taco chips, sesame seeds,
toasted corn, etc.. . . There's
coffee beans and teas from
around the world . . .
machine for people to grind
their own coffee . . . and
packages of English break-
fast tea among so many,
many others.
There's even a machine
that grinds peanuts into
pure peanut butter . . . Cus-
tomers pour their own
honey, molasses, corn
syrup, peanut oil, etc.
Everything is sold by the
ounce or by the pound .. .
One can hardly think of
anything Mr. Bulky doesn't
have.
The cheeses galore take
up an entire large refriger-
ated case . . . Nancy Fink,
married to Nate's and Shir-
ley's son, David, is in charge
of the huge cheese section.
Can't forget the over 600
pounds of apricots imported
from Turkey . . . or hun-
dreds of pounds of Golden
Sultana raisins from Au-
stralia . . . or the natural
colossal pistachios from
California . . . or white wal-
nuts from China.
Nate and Marty have
opened somewhat of a bulk
food grocery store . . . with
the Woodward operation
serving as a prototype for
the chain they hope to have
. . . A franchise has already
opened in Westland . . . and
another one expected late
May in Dearborn.
But the fellows don't stop
at just bulk foods . . . Their
setup also includes baking
on the premises . . . seven
different types of giant muf-
fins . . . seven kinds of crois-
sants . . . even their own
bagels.
People also see imported
gourmet sauces, considered
delicious on toast (like the
hazelnut chocolate spread).
This is an altogether
different type of bulk food
store . . . there's trash bags,
kitchen and glass cleanser,
steak sauces, distilled
water, matzah, salad dres-
sings, wheat crackers, rice,
etc., in boxes and bottles.
Name the cookie . . .
chances are Mr. Bulky has
it.

Customer Lillian Rosen
calls it, "Absolutely over-
whelming!"
Nate and Marty have left
few stones unturned in this
big business . . . It certainly
had to be a biggie . . . and
something very unusual .. .
to get Nate out of retire-
, ment . . . He was quite set in
taking life easy.
NO MORE DEWEY'S
. . . not White Parrot, either,
as new name . . . Latest
night spot opens soon in
Michigan Inn, J. L. Hudson
Drive . . . called the Red
Parrot.
RED CEDARS on Tele-
graph and Nine Mile has
been in operation 10 years
. . . and never opened on
Sunday . . . It will be first
time for Jack and Lenore
Freed as moms get a flower
for Mother's Day, May 13.
THIRD ANNUAL
Variety Club of Detroit
Celebrity Ball will be May
11 at Michigan Inn, J. L.
Hudson Dr. . . . WCZY per-
sonality Dick Purtan, will
again emcee . . . and come-
dian Red Buttons headlines
the entertainment . . . with
Johnny Trudell Band.
Tickets to the ball are
$100 per person . . . with
proceeds going to Variety
Club's Electronic Limb Re-
search Center at Detroit In-
stitute For Children .. .
Variety Club is a very fine
organization whose inter-
national contributions to
children's charities run into
hundreds of millions of dol-
lars over five decades.
The Variety Club Elec-
tronic Limb Research Cen-
ter provides children, born
or through accident, minus
a hand, or hands, with elec-
tronic limbs . . . This suc-
cessful breakthrough re-
places the traditional hook
prosthesis.
Award presentations at
the dinner will be given for
Humanitarian and Pioneer
of Variety . . . Also to fig-
ures in sports, newspaper,
radio, television and arts.
The "bionic kids" using
these hands . . . and their
parents . . . are mighty
thankful there is such an
organization as Variety
Club.
For more info on the ball
and/or the group, call Chief
Barker Bruce Rosen, 352-
6222.
WHY THE HANGUP?
. . . A proposed law is sup-
posedly still on the state
legislative books for re-
enactment one way or an-
other . . . on places with food
to serve beer and wine.
GARY PRIMO, at piano
bar in lounge at Pine Hills
(former Honey Tree), was
part of the famed Primo
Family of about ten years
ago . . . four brothers and
four sisters . . . that toured
around the country and was
a Las Vegas hit.
All sang, with the
brothers on instrumental
and the sisters lead vocaliz-
ing . . ;before a bit of dissen-
sion caused breakup .. .
Gary had a trio after that,
