The Jews in America are
not aware that Israeli
society is not a monolithic
one, Bar-On, said, claiming
that the "dovish" views he
represents are shared by at
least 50 percent of the Is-
raeli population. He said
that during the tour he was
branded many times "a
traitor" by angry audiences.

But both said that many
American Jews don't know
"what's really happening in
the Mideast," and that for
them the Palestinian ques-
tion . is an abstract issue
while for those who live in
Israel "the Palestinian
people is a reality."
Mordechai Bar-On, a
leader in the Peace Now
Movement and a former
aide to the late Defense and
Foreign Minister Moshe
Dayan said: "What's hap-
pening (to) American Jewry
is somewhat tragic — They
can't do anything else but
support the policies of the
government of Israel."

Nafez Nazzal, a history
professor at Bir Zeit Uni-
versity in the West Bank,
said: "I felt that there is a
sense of concern among
Jews of what's happening in
the Mideast. I also found
that among American Jews
there was knowledge of the
situation (in the Mideast)
but no courage." He said he
found "confusion" regard-
ing the issue of the Pales-
tine Liberation Organiza-
tion. He said that the PLO
represents the Palestinian
people and it is an illusion
for anyone to think other-
wise.
Bar-On and Nazzal spoke

German leader
slates talks
with Qaddafi

Bonn (JTA) — The West
German government has
announced that Foreign
Minister Hans-Dietrich
Genscher will visit Libya
Monday to hold talks with
ruler Muammar el-Qaddafi,
his top aide Abdul Salam
Jalloud and other officials.
Bonn diplomats went out of
their way to stress that the
visit was planned before the
latest incident in London, in
which a policewoman was
killed by shots from the Li-
byan Embassy.

According to the Bonn
diplomats, Genscher is
eager to have a dialogue
with a representative of a
radical Arab state espe-
cially at this critical stage of
Middle East diplomacy. But
the visit, the diplomats
added, does not mean that
Bonn intends to give any
additional political weight
to Qaddafi's regime.

In order to demonstrate
an even-handed approach,
Genscher's aide Juergen
Moellemann will visit
Egypt several days before
the Foreign Minister leaves
for Tripoli. Moellemann
will meet president Hosni
Mubarak and other offi-
cials, notably Defense
Minister Mohamed Abu
Ghasala (who was here
last year to hold talks on
arms sales and on assembl-
ing West German weapons
systems. in Egypt).
