Beth Goldberg, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Nate
Goldberg of West Bloom-
field, will share her bat
mitzvah with Anna Cher-
nobilsky of Moscow,
RSFSR, USSR, at Cong.
Beth Abraham Hillel Moses
services at 8:45 a.m. Satur-
day.
Anna is the daughter of
Boris and Elena Cher-
nobilsky. He and his family
applied to leave the Soviet
Union in May 1975, and
were refused the following
year. Since that time, he
has worked at a series of
odd jobs with periods of un-
employment.
His wife, Elena, teaches
Hebrew. Together they or-
ganized a kindergarten for
small children. After being
denied an exit visa, Cher-
nobilsky participated in a
series of peaceful protest
demonstrations. During one
such demonstration in Oc-
tober 1976, he was arrested
and sentenced to 15 days in
Butyrskaya prison on al-
leged charges of "organizing
a demonstration, striking
members of the Soviet
militia and hooliganism."
He was arrested again on
May 10, 1981, at an ac-
tivists' gathering in
Opalikha woods outside
Moscow, and accused of
"beating a policeman." His
trial was scheduled to take
place on July 23, when he
was to be charged with al-
legedly "resisting police-
man or people's guard in
conjunction with force or
threat of application of
force." He faced a maximum
punishment of five years
imprisonment.
Chernobilsky maintained
that the charges against
him were false, and did not
appear at his trial, but in-
stead sent the following
statement
to
Soviet
Leonid
I.
President
Brezhnev:
