Jerusalem (JTA) —
Representatives of the op-
position Labor Alignment
will share the platform with
government. ministers at
the international economic
conference scheduled to
open here May 20, it was
announced at a press con-
ference Tuesday.
The announcement came
after concern was expressed
in many quarters that the
event might be used by the
Likud government to ad-
vance its interests in the
election campaign. Eli
Hurwitz, chairman of the
public council which is ar-
ranging the economic con-
ference, made a formal re-
quest to allow opposition
leaders to speak.
According to one report,
former U.S. Secretary of
State Henry Kissinger had
been scheduled to attend
the conference but with-
drew because he did not
want to become involved in
Israeli election politics.
The conference is aimed
at boosting foreign invest-
ments in Israel. According
to its organizers, some 500
businessmen and indus-
trialists from 19 countries
will attend.

Tel >Aviv (JTA) — The
annual Mimouna festivities
— the traditional secular
festival of North African,
and especially Moroccan
Jewry — were held in Tel
Aviv this week.
The Beyahad (together)
organization, which has re-
vived the festivities in re-
cent years attempting to
transform them into an "all
Israel Festival" rather than
a Sephardi or North African
feast, announced last week
that no electioneering
would be allowed at the fes-
tival.
Guest speakers at the
opening were President
Chaim Herzog, Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir
and opposition leader Shi-
mon Peres.

General asks
for patience

New York — The Israel
Council of Youpg Israel
Synagogues held its annual
dinner recently in
Jerusalem. The featured
speaker, Israeli Chief of
Staff Moshe Levy, declared
that the IDF forces should
not leave southern Lebanon
before Israel's northern
border security is guaran-
teed. He called upon the Is-
raeli public to have patience
and perseverance until "a
solution to the difficulties in
Lebanon could be found."
