Elbilia's boxing career is a family matter. The French champion's entourage includes (from

The fighter's brothers,
Joseph and Daniel, are also
part of the entourage. His
mother and three sisters
remain at home, cheering
him on and worrying about
his safety, Elbilia says
somewhat chauvinistically.
Elbilia began fighting as
an amateur at the age of 16.
His amateur record of
32-2-3 includes an appear-
ance at the 1977 Maccabiah
Games in Israel. Since turn-
ing professional at 22, he
has fought in Haiti, Morocco

and throughout most of
Europe. He captured the
European welterweight
crown last Feb. 19, knock-
ing out a previously un-
beaten Nino LaRocca in
LaRocca's home town of Sic-
ily.
Critics of Elbilia say he is
technically a very good
fighter but that he lacks a
knock-oLit ,punch. The
Frenchman, who admits to
idolizing former welter-
weight and middleweight
champion Sugar Ray

Robinson, says he is a
"boxer" rather than a "slug-
ger" and that by "using the
speed in my hands and legs,
I usually wear down my op-
ponents."
Although Elbilia's boxing
skills weren't quite enough
to "wear down" McCrory
Sunday, his unshakable at-
tachment to Judaism helps
him cope with defeat as well
as victory. "Whether I am
the winner or loser in a
fight, I still believe very
strongly in God," he said.

CRIF marks 40th year

Paris (JTA) — French
Jewry is celebrating the
40th anniversary of the
founding of the Representa-
tive Council of French
Jewish Organizations.
CRIF was founded by mem-
bers of the Jewish under-
ground in German-occupied
France in 1944 as a symbol
of their determination to
survive and rebuild the
Jewish institutions de-
stroyed by the Nazis.
The principle ceremonies
were held in Lyon where
Klaus Barbie, the wartime
gestapo chief there, is now
in prison awaiting trial for
crimes against humanity.
They were attended by,
among others, the Ar-
chbishop of Lyon, Cardinal
Albert Decourtray, who
stressed his solidarity with
the Jewish people, and by
Defense Minister Charles
Hernu who noted that Bar-
bie, known as the "Butcher
of Lyon," is finally to be
brought to justice.
There were also cere-
monies in the village of
Izieu where, 40 years ago
almost to the day of the
founding of CRIF, 43 Jewish

children were arrested for
deportation on Barbie's or-
ders.
CRIF was founded in
Lyon by a Jewish judge,
Leon Meiss, who was in hid-
ing from the Nazis at the
time. Today it is the repre-
sentative body of 50 major

Jewish organizations in
France.
Its current president,
Theo Klein, recalled the
tragic past and urged the
French Jewish community
and Jews the world over to
remain vigilant against all
forms of racism.

Rabin outlines Lebanon pullout
plan for Israel. Defense Force

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Former
Premier Yitzhak Rabin has
outlined a plan by which, he
says, the Israel Defense
Force could be withdrawn
completely from Lebanon in
three to six months. He was
sharply critical of the gov-
ernment for "wasting" a
year negotiating its pact
with the government of
President Amin Gemayel of
Lebanon when it should
have concentrated on build-
ing up the south Lebanon
army.
According to Rabin, the
May 17, 1983, withdrawal
and security agreement
which the Gemayel gov-
ernment has since re-

pudiated was "a piece of
paper lacking in any practi-
cal meaning from its incep-
tion."
In a weekend radio inter-
view, Rabin, a former Chief
of Staff and a member of the
Labor Party leadership in
the upcoming election cam-
paign, said the IDF could be
replaced by a strengthened
south Lebanon army which
would be responsible for the
security of Israel's northern
borders. He proposed that
the United Nations Interim
Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)
replace the IDF in the
Lebanese port city of Sidon
and serve as a buffer be-
tween Israel and Syria.
