Prof. Dovl Kulka of the
department of the history of
the Jewish people at the
Hebrew University, said
that had the German mas-
ses expressed any abhorr-
ence to the treatment of the
Jews, it might have affected
the Nazis' anti-Jewish pol-
icy.

Prof. Yisrael Gutman of
the Institute of Contempor-
ary Jewry at the Hebrew
University, addressed the
question of "Why did the
Jews let themselves be kil-
led?" He said this is a ques-
tion one often hears from Is-
raeli youth. The answer
usually given is that Jews
had learned to lie low and to
submit, through years of
stunting ghetto life, and did
not consider resisting.

But this ignores three
basic facts, he said: first,
that the Jews of Europe
were not a unified group
with common char-
acteristics; second, not all
resistance is armed resis-
tance, but can take other
forms such as the deter-
mined effort to remain
alive; and third, that the
Jewish registers knew that
whatever action they took,
they would die and the Hit-
ler machine would undoub-
tedly march forward.

resistance to Nazis

Jerusalem — "The Nazi
resistance fighters in Ger-
many were a tiny minority;
they couldn't change the
system, and they cannot be
used to excuse the Ger-
mans." So said Prof. R.M.
Lepsius of the University of
Heidelberg, West Germany,
at an international confer-
ence held in Jerusalem on
resistance to the Nazi re-
gime, sponsored by the He-
brew University of
Jerusalem, its Richard M.
Koebner Chair of German
history, the Goethe Insti-
tute and the Naumann
Foundation.
Participants in the semi-
nar, held at the Van Leer
Foundation, included aca-
demics from both Israel and
West Germany, as well as
German political figures
and former resistance fight-
ers.
Prof. Lepsius stressed
that the resistance fighters
within Germany never
stood much of a chance of
overthrowing the Nazi re-
gime, and it was only the
Allied powers which could
have defeated Hitler. Legal
democratic resistance was
suppressed immediately
after Hitler came to power
in 1933, said Lepsius.
Other symposium speak-
ers dwelt on various aspects
of why the internal resis-
tance to the Nazis failed in
Germany. The German op-
position consistently sought
help in its effort from
England, but got none, said
Dr. Hedva Ben-Israel,
chairman of the history de-
partment of the Hebrew
University. The English felt
that another Hitler would
only arise if Hitler were as-
sassinated; further, they
could not see themselves
cooperating with figures in
the German army in such a
plot, she said.
