Continued from preceding page
nent Jews were descended
from the Edomites.
Goren was skeptical of
the chances of success in the
20th Century, but approved
in principle as being in con-
formity with Halachah. -
The matter was next
taken up with the Minister
of Religion, Moshe Chayim
Shapiro, who agreed. The
two Chief Rabbis hesitated,
but also agreed when reas-
sured there would be no
compulsion.
The military began to re-
fine the plans. Problems
were expected, especially
with the first generation,
but it was felt that after 25
years of education and as-
similation, relations would
be smooth. Goren planned
the recruiting of Arabic-
speaking rabbis and the set-
ting up of a religious estab-
lishment. The scheme bore
the code name Project
Yochanan, after Yochanan
(John) the Baptist. The
number of persons involved
was about 20,000, of whom
13,000 were in the Negev
and about 7,000 in the
Galilee.
At this stage Ben-Gurion
was called back to political
life. He became Minister of
Defense and then again
Prime Minister, and his
time was taken up with
other pressing matters. He
lost interest in Project
Yochanan. Perhaps he be-
came aware of what the
reaction might have been in
the Arab world.
As it turned out, the Be-
douins of Israel became
loyal and faithful citizens of
the state — and remained
Moslems.
KKK members,
Nazis acquitted
in N.C. trial
Winston-Salem, N.C.
The 14-week trial of three
neo-Nazis and six Ku Klux
Klan members ended Sun-
day as all nine were acquit-
ted of conspiring to disrupt a
197% anti-Klan rally in
Greensboro, N.C. in which
five demonstrators were kil-
led.
Found innocent by the
all-white, six-man, six
woman federal jury were:
Roland Wood, Jack Fowler,
Jr. and Raeford Caudle, all
former members of the
American Nazi Party; and
Virgil Griffin, Edward
Dawson, David Matthews,
Jerry Smith, Roy Toney and
Coleman Pridmore, all
former or current members
of the KKK.
Five members of the
Communist Workers Party
were shot to death during a
"Death to the Klan" rally in
Greensboro Nov. 3, 1979.
One Klansman and a televi-
sion camera man were
wounded in the melee. Six of
the defendants were found
not guilty of murder in a
1980 state trial.
