Israel wants
Black Hebrews
back in U.S.

Jerusalem — A group of
about 1,000 black Ameri-
cans who formed a cult in
Israel, including some who
have renounced their citi-
zenship, are no longer wel-
come in the Jewish state,
according to the New York
Times.
The Times reported this
week that the Israeli gov-
ernment has asked the U.S.
to take back the Black He-
brews, who say they are de-
scendants of the original
Jews and have settled —
most without official con-
sent — in southern Israel.
Because the Black He-
brews came on three-month
tourist visas and simply
stayed after the visas ex-
pired, they have no legal
status in Israel, the Times
reported. Citing their lack
of a rabbinically recognized
connection to Judaism, an
Israeli Interior Ministry of-
ficial said that to make
them citizens would con-
tradict Israeli law.
"After all, they were born
in the United States, they
came from the United
States and, even if they re-
nounced their citizenship,
the American government
can't ignore them," the offi-
cial said. A number of the
Black Hebrews have ex-
pressed a desire to return to
America, the Times said.

Israel Bonds
to cite Weiler

New York (JTA) — The
80th birthday of Jack
Weiler, a major figure on
the American and world
Jewish scene for more than
40 years, will be observed by
the Charter Members of the
Israel Bond Organization's
Israel President's Club at a
dinner party May 31, at the
Plaza Hotel here.
Max Fisher will serve as
one of the co-chairmen of
the event along with Sam
Rothberg, international
chairman of Israel Bonds,
and David Hermelin, na-
tional champaign chair-
man.

Corrections

The Passover prices
story in last week's Jewish
News contained an error
in the segment on Cholov
Yisrael — kosher milk.
Many Orthodox Jews use
Cholov Yisrael because of
the rabbinical decree that
milk should be supervised.
•
The name of Terry
Rotenberg, owner-
manager of Gemini Travel
at Orchard Mall, was mis-
spelled in last week's
Jewish News.
•
In the Passover greeting
from State Insurance
Agency last week there
was an error in the spel-
ling of C.L.U. David L.
Friedman's name.
