Rabbis' stand on Center
intermarriage series told
BY HEIDI PRESS
Local News Editor
At the final program last
Sunday in the Jewish
Community Center's "Is-
sues in Intermarriage"
series, an announcement
was made that the Rabbini-
cal Commission of the
Jewish Community Council
had condemned the Center
for holding such a series and
criticized the two rabbis
who had participated on its
panels.
Rabbi Stanley _Rosen-
baum, president of the Rab-
binical Commission, told
The Jewish News that no
formal resolution was
passed by the commission
criticizing the Center or the
two participating rabbis. He
said it was not an agenda
item, and only came up for
discussion because a
member of the Jewish Cen-
ter staff was at the commis-
sion meeting on another
matter.
He added however that
there were "a great deal of
negative comments" from
some of the rabbis, who he
declined to name.
He said the rabbis at the
meeting were critical of the
Center for holding such a
program for a variety ofrea-
sons. Rosenbaum said that
the rabbis' body "knew
nothing" about the Center's
series on intermarriage.
Asked if the Center
should have approached the
commission about having
such a program, Rosen-
baum said, "When a pro-
gram deals with the status
of a person in Jewish law, it
is automatically an area of
concern" for the rabbis.
"The way the Center went
about it (sponsoring the
series) was incorrect," he
said.
Rosenbaum said the criti-
cism of the Center came
about because the Center
forged ahead on its own.
"I don't know the nature of
the program's intent."
According to the promo-
tional literature for the
series, it was a "workshop
for interfaith couples, their
friends and relatives, a
unique three-part workshop
which deals with the
psychological, social, cul-
tural, moral and religious
concerns that are part of the
adjustment to Jewish life."
He added the question of
Center sponsorship also was
.criticized because it re-
ceives Allied Jewish Cam-
paign funds raised by per-
sons from all major areas of
Jewish life — Reform, Con-
servative and Orthodox —
and "their (the Center's)
sponsorship (of a program
on a topic of such a sensitive
nature to Jews) may be of-
fensive to many people."
About the criticism of the
two rabbis who partici-
pated, Dannel Schwartz and
Norman Roman of Temple
Beth El, Rabbi Rosenbaum
said, "There was no formal
condemnation of them."
Rosenbaum said the rab-
bis' body had no animosity
toward the Center, since at
the same meeting it had
agreed to do a joint outreach
program for senior citizens
with the Center.
Asked for a response to
Sunday's statement, the
Center administration de-
clined to comment.
