Terrorists hit
IDF soldiers
in S. Lebanon
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Four Is-
raeli soldiers were wounded
and a local resident was kil-
led in south Lebanon last
week when a booby-trapped
vehicle exploded on a road-
side east of Tyre as an Israel
Defense Force patrol passed
by. The latest incident
brought to five the casual-
ties sustained by the IDF in
Lebanon last week. An Is-
raeli soldier was wounded
in Nabatiya by a hand gre-
nade that injured five local
residents.
In Israel, a bobby-trapped
grenade found near a kiosk
in B'nai Brak was safely de-
fused by sappers.
Security sources are
blaming Syria for the recent
increase in attacks on Israel
Defense Force personnel in
Lebanon. According to the
sources, there were at least
70 attacks or attempted at-
tacks during the past month
which resulted in four Is-
raeli soldiers dead and 32
wounded. There were 16 at-
tacks in the first ledays of
April.
The sources say this is
due to Syria's failure to re-
strain terrorists operating
from areas of Lebanon it
controls. Observers noted
that where the Syrians have
acted to prevent attacks,
such as on the Golan
Heights, none have oc-
curred.
Kosher pricing
survey in-NY
New York (JTA) — The
first state-wide kosher food
market basket survey,
which Governor Mario
Cuomo ordered in response
to wide-spread complaints
about kosher product price
gouging, indicated that
while prices for kosher meat
and poultry did not rise dur-
ing its current pre-Passover
shopping period, observant
consumers still pay twice as
much for kosher foods as do
consumers buying similar
non-kosher products.
In disclosing the survey
findings, Cuomo said he
would create a permanent
Kosher Foods Advisory
Co'uncil to examine, among
other matters of interest to
observant consumers, why
the same kosher grocery
item can be significantly
more costly in one store
than another. He said "the
issue we now will explore is
whether kosher food prices
are exorbitant all year
around."
Cuomo said the survey
had also found that con-
sumers buying matzah and
matzah meal for Passover
will pay higher prices in up-
state New York retail out-
lets because of recent price
increases but that
downstate residents can ex-
pect to pay the same price as
usual for matzah products.
