He examined ORT's programs in computers, robotics and lasers. In Israel, 20 percent of the labor force is involved in high technology, compared to 14 percent in the U.S. Archbishop John O'Connor BY MARC TANENBAUM During the early days of Vatican Council II, a number of Italian Jewish leaders in Rome were so moved by the humanity and friendship of the late Pope John Paul XXIII, that they often used to tell me, "This Pope John is the best Pope the Jews ever had." I felt something of that same spirit of appreciation for the person of Archbishop John J. O'Connor when I attended with other Jewish leaders his recent installa- tion at St. Patrick's Cathed- ral. It's no secret that the Archbishop came to New York in a cloud of con- troversy, triggered by his unfortunate comparison of abortion with the Nazi Holocaust. While with Missing soldier reported captive of terror group Tel Aviv (JTA) — Secu- rity sources confirmed a re- port from Damascus last week that an Israeli Druze soldier, reported missing a yealt ago, is a captive of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, (DFLP), a Damascus-based terrorist group headed by Nayef Hawatmeh. The soldier was identified as Samir Assad who lived in a Druze village in Galilee. The DFLP disclosed that it was holding Assad only last month. Until then his whereabouts had been un- known. The announcement gave his rank as sergeant and his army serial number. It also contained a state- ment from the soldiers say- ing he was well. Druze leaders. in Israel have appealed for his re- lease. He has not yet been visited by a representative of the International Red Cross. many others I share with Archbishop O'Connor his profound reverence for life, I found his analogy intellec- tually inaccurate and mor- ally troubling. The Nazis' systematic campaign to destroy the entire Jewish people was an altogether different mag- nitude of demonic evil than the serious moral issues in- volved in individual women making personal choices. Nevertheless, it is to the credit of Archbishop O'Con- nor and a sign of his honesty and openness, that he lis- tened seriously to his cri- tics. In his wonderful mov- ing homily, he reaffirmed his important comm4ment to the value of life, without any demeaning compari- sons. This Archbishop came through to me as an ex- traordinary human being — highly intelligent, widely educated, direct, no phony pretense, and with a knock- out sense of humor. He has a profound sense that reli- gious leaders exist to serve, not to be served. Beyond that, his years of leadership as a Navy chap- lain have clearly made reli- gious pluralism — respect for Jews and for other Christians — a basic part of his vision. Archbishop O'Connor is a gift to the moral leadership of this city, and I bet it will not be too long before people will be saying, "This man is the best Archbishop the Jews and New York ever had."
