He leaves his wife, Ruth; a brother, Louis; three sisters, Mrs. Thane (Ida) Hall, Mrs. Ed- Louis Horowitz Louis Albert Horowitz, a retired fresh produce and food distributor, died April 7 at age 73. Born in Poland, Mr. Horowitz lived more than 50 years in Detroit. At the time of his death, Mr. Horowitz was chairman of the board of directors of Young Israel of Oak-Woods of which he was a past president. During his presidency at Oak-Woods, he helped in- troduce educational and cultural programs that have remained as part of the congregation's ongoing ac- tivities. He also was active in bringing many new young members into the congregation. Among the Jewish com- munal causes to which he aligned himself were: the Jewish Welfare Federation and Allied Jewish Cam- paign, Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, Miz- rachi, Cong. B'nai Israel- Beth Yehudah, Shaare Zedek Hospital, Bar-Ilan University, B'nai B'rith, the Intercongregational Asso- ciation of Men's Clubs and the United Hebrew Schools. He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Herbert J. of Princeton, N.J., and Michael P.; a daughter, Mrs. Elaine Block; three brothers, Josef H., Max H. and Lawrence H.; a sister, Mrs. Murray (Evelyn) Liberman; and eight grand- children. Harry Krinsky Harry Krinsky, former owner of New Modern Bak- ery, died April 8 at age 81. Born in Russia, Mr. Krinsky lived 64 years in Detroit. He was a member of Cong. Beth Abraham Hillel Moses. He leaves his wife, Betty; three sons, Joseph, Sam and Dr. Nathan; a daughter, Mrs. Bess Lupiloff; a brother, Sam; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Sherman; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. IRENE GROSS, 91, died April 5. She leaves two sons, Louis and Harold; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. * * * DORA LEVIN, 88, died April 6. Survived by a son, Sylvan; two nieces, Adeline Max Silverman Max- M. Silverman, an at- torney in practice for more than 50 years, died April 6 in North Miami Beach, Fla. He was 81. Born in New Jersey, Mr. Silverman was in the first graduating class of the Wayne State University Law School. He was a de- fense attorney specializing in criminal law. Mr. Silverman was chief of the homicide division of the Wayne County Pro- secutors Office. He also was a practicing attorney in the Legal Aid Defenders Asso- ciation where he worked with Sen. Carl Levin, Wayne County Judge Michael Connor and Myzel Sowell on the criminal jurisprudence commission of the State Bar. He leaves his wife, Shir- ley; a son, Judge Lawrence D.; two daughters, Geral- dine Snider and Mrs. Selden (Maureen) Schwartzberg of Hollywood, Fla.; a brother, Daniel; nine grandchildren and two great-grand- children. In the Rarly 1930s, when itinerant representatives of religious institutions in pre-state Israel and sections of the United States were trained here, the Hakhnosat Orkhim, the House of Shelter, rendered great service providing temporary shelter for the stranded. It was located on Taylor St. in Detroit before its services were reduced, requiring sheltering in hotels. That's when Mr. Silver- man as president of the House of Shelter was the guiding spirit in perpetuat- ing an old Jewish tradition. He was active in the the Jewish Social Service Bureau which preceded the Jewish Family Service and Resettlement Service and the Allied Jewish Cam- paign. * * * * * * 81, died April 5. He leaves his wife, Victoria; a son, Al- bert; three daughters, Mrs. Gert (Allegra) Freund, Mrs. Salomon (Miriam) Chocron Joseph Weisberg, Advocate editor Boston (JTA) — Joseph Weiberg, editor and pub- lisher of the Boston Jewish Advocate, died April 9. He was 73. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr. Weisberg was in private law practice for 10 years until he joined the Advocate in 1946. He was a reporter for the Bos- ton Post from 1929 to 1933 before enrolling in Harvard College. Mr. Weisberg was active in legal, educational and so- cial service causes. He was a member of the board of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and a founder and past president of the American Jewish Press Association. He was a fellow of Brandeis University, a member of the Overseas Press Club and of the Massachusetts Board of Education. He was also a member of the Association of World Jewish Jour- nalists. Mr. Weisberg received awards and citations from Women's American ORT; the Zionist Organization of America; the Union of American Hebrew Congre- gations; the New England Press Association; the B'nai B'rith, the state legislature; and the Associated Syna- gogues of Massachusetts. He was a trustee of the Combined Jewish Philan- thropies of Greater Boston and a member of the execu- tive council of the American Jewish Historical Society. Other Deaths April 9.
