Jews will hold the annual
Holocaust Memorial
Academy on April 29 at
B'nai David at 1 p.m.
Leon Halpern, president
of Shaarit Haplaytah and
the Holocaust Memorial
Center, said that this year
the 27th of Nisan, desig-
nated as Yom Hashoa —
Holocaust Remembrance
Day — falls on April 29, and
the period from April 29 to
May 6 was proclaimed as
the Days of Remembrance.
A candlelighting cere-
mony by the survivors of the
concentration camps and
ghettos accompanied by the
children of Holocaust
surivors, will be led by
Sonia Popowski, chairman
of the day. Abraham Pas-
ternak will lead in the Kid-
dush Tzibbur. Cantors
Hyman Adler of Cong. B'nai
David and Max Shimansky
of Cong. Beth Achim will
chant memorial renditions.
They will be accompanied
by Lillian Zellman.
Halpern will welcome the
assembly and brief greet-
ings will be extended by
Zelda Robinson, Jewish
Community Council; Henry
S. Dorfman, chairman,
Holocaust Memorial Center
executive committee and
capital endowment pro-
gram; Arthur Weiss, Junior
Division, Shaarit Hap-
laytah; Robert A. Arkand,
director, Greater Detroit
Round Table of the NCCJ;
Charles Silow, president,
Children of the Holocaust
Survivors Association in
Michigan.
Rabbi Morton F. Yolkut
of Cong. B'nai David will
extend remarks. Memorial
musical selections will be
performed by Eric Rosenow,
piano. and Charles Weiner,
clarinet. Shari Ferber will
give recitations. The people
of Denmark will receive the
"Righteous Among the Na-
tions of the World Citation"
(Hasidei Umot Haolam) for
"their courageous and noble
mission of rescuing nearly
the entire Danish Jewry
from extermination by the
Nazi genocidal machinery."
The award will be presented
by Dr. John J. Mames,
chairman of the oral history
project and the Holocaust
studies department of
Shaarit Haplaytah to Con-
sul Marshall M. Fredericks
of the Royal Danish Consu-
late.
A proclamation from Gov.
James Blanchard and mes-
sages from other dignitaries
will be acknowledged by Dr.
Irving Gastman of the
Junior Division, Shaarit
Haplaytah and Holocaust
Memorial Center.

Rosenzveig, director of the
Holocaust Memorial Cen-
ter, will deliver the memo-
rial address. Al Rose, com-
mander, and members of
the Jewish War Veterans
Department of Michigan
will present the colors. The
community is invited.
JVS loan officer named
The Jewish Vocational
Service and Community
Workshop has announced
the appointment of Edwina
C. Davis as the Education
Loan Service coordinator.
Ms. Davis will provide
scholarship counseling to
undergraduate, technical
and graduate students. In
addition, she will provide
assessment and adminis-
trative services for the
Jewish Educational Loan
Service (JELS).
Ms. Davis holds master's
degrees in education and so-
cial work. Prior to joining
the JVS, Ms. Davis was ad-
ministrative assistant to
Detroit City Councilwoman
Maryann Mahaffey. She is a
member and board member
of National Organization
for Women, Southeast
Michigan Food Coalition,
American Jewish Commit-
tee and National Council of
Jewish Women, Greater
Detroit Section.
