Shamir met with mem- bers of the Council of Settlers in Judaea and Samaria who complained bitterly over what they con- sider inadequate funding for new settlements in the territory. Benny Katzover and Yisrael Harel, two of the more militant settler leaders, demanded greater resources for new settle- ments before the July 23 elections. Shamir sought to place the settlements within the broad framework of gov- ernment spending which must be cut back in com- pliance with Finance Minis- ter Yigal Cohen-Orgad's austerity economic pro- gram. Cohen-Orgad, who is building a home for himself in Ariel on the West Bank, strongly supported the Prime Minister. The set- tlements budget cannot es- cape the pruning knife, he said. r Activities in Society Elaine Sturman of Bir- mingham was in Israel last month to participate in Hadassah's study mission for young leaders. ' Branch Manager Phone: 259-6190 Labor unites behind Peres Jerusalem (JTA) — The Labor Party will enter the election campaign united behind Shimon Peres. Its Central Committee unani- mously nominated him to head its list in the July 23 elections and had praise for his two rivals, former Pre- mier Yitzhak Rabin and former President Yitzhak Navon for gracefully bow- ing out of the race in the interests of party unity. Likud also is striving for internal unity. Deputy Premier David Levy's an- nouncement that he will not contest Premier Yitzhak Shamir for the top spot on the election list eased the situation. But former De- fense Minister Ariel Sharon reiteratred that he was de- termined to run against Shamir despite appeals from many Herut activists to withdraw from the race. Labor announced that the defeat of Likud is its top priority. Peres warned the Central Committee that "victory is not guaranteed. We should not sit back satis- fied. But victory is not im- possible. Our main task is to replace the Likud regime, for the good of the people, the country and the Labor Party." Navon, in his first politi- cal speech since ending his five-year term as president last year, agreed that Labor must present a united front. Many political observers believe that former Premier Menachem Begin was a key factor in Levy's "last min- ute" decision not to run against Shamir. Begin, who has been in virtual seclusion since he resigned last summer, in- vited Shamir to his home last week for their first face-to-face meeting in months. They reportedly discussed the election cam- paign and other party mat- ters. Meanwhile, MK David Magen, a leading Sharon supporter, told reporters that if Sharon wins 30 per- cent of the vote in the Herut Central Committee, he would consider it a substan- tial success that would sig- nificantly strengthen his standing in the party. Four arrested in attacks on religious sites Jerusalem (jta) — Jerusalem police an- nounced Monday the ar- rests of four ultra-religious Israeli youths who they say are responsible for the series of bomb and grenade attacks on Christian and Moslem religious sites in Jerusalem and on the West Bank in recent months. The accused were iden- tified as the brothers Avi and Ami Darei, their cousin, David Darei, and Uri Ben-Ayun. According to the police; they comprise the group calling itself "Terror Against Terror" (TNT), which has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks. Ben-Aytin was described as the leader. Jerusalem Police Corn- missioner Rahamin Com- fort insisted that the four had acted alone and were in no way connected with any political or other groups. He specifically ruled out any link between the "TNT" and four Orthodox Jews, recent immigrants from the U.S., who were arrested two weeks ago for the ambush attack on a bus carrying Arab day workers from the West Bank to their jobs in Israel. There also is no con- nection between the four Is- raelis and another group of ultrareligious Jews await- ing trial for an attempt to blow up the El Aksa Mosque on the Temple Mount, Com- fort said. 26647 Southfield Road Between 101/2 & 11 Mile Roads Under the Red & White Canopy Open Mon.-Sat. 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Step into spring with 111111111111111111111111111111011 111111111111111111111 1111111•1111PIIM.11'. 4t/If 0 .:4 ■ 4111•111 11 11111•1111 - _:=F / 1.1.1111111111, 'LIMP 111111111/21/ ..111•111111r,"/ ICA•111/7:111 ■■ PAR•11111111111/ At11/• ∎1111111 ■ WAIF: vier. fr. near:,./fimum MeV .4111/ 1.46111 ■ /74 ► 41111111111111 ■ 4•••••• .11Wif ■ 11•4••• ■ ••' 4•11111111111111111 ■■■ 10!".511111111 4111 ■ / •11111•111111111111 ■ ► 11111111111111111111d111111•111111111111•111111111 11111111111111111111.54111111 • 11 II II 111Sil ■ 1111111111111LIIIMAIILJUIU10:111J111:241 20-40% off all DA NASNIN Leotards • tights • warm-ups Ripstop Activewear children's Sale begins April 13 Birmingham Southfield 351 S.
