After graduating from
Temple University in 1932
he began to announce all of
the university sporting
events, including the first
boxing match against West
Point. He hit the big time
when he became the voice in
the first Sugar Bowl game
in New Orleans in 1935
when the late Coach Pop
Warner's Temple team lost
to Tulane University. To
this day he remains the
voice at all Temple football
contests and at all of the
Owl basketball games.
After building a reputa-
tion in the collegiate ranks,
he joined the late Eddie
Gottlieb as his announcer
for the Philadelphia
SPHAS, perennial Ameri-
can Basketball Champions.
Due to Gottlieb's close rela-
tionship with the late Abe
Saperstein, owner of the
Harlem Globetrotters, Zin-
koff latched on to that club
and shortly thereafter
began doing the announc-
ing for the Phillies baseball
team in Connie Mack
Staduim. He is still going
strong after five decades,
and is the voice of many
major sporting events in-
cluding tennis, boxing,
wrestling and, obviously,
basketball. _
His photo hangs on the
second floor of the Basket-
ball Hall of Fame, being the
only announcer so honored.
If you need proof that the
"Zink" is the greatest, we
refer you to the incident
which occurred early last
month in the Philadelphia
Spectrum. After the sharp-
tongued, hot-headed John
McEnroe won the U.S. Pro
Indoor Championship, fol-
lowed immediately by his
winning the doubles bauble
with Peter Fleming, McEn-
roe delivered a gracious
thank-you speech.
He paid homage to the
Fernberger family who
promoted the tournament
and then thanked the fans
who were present. After
that he turned toward Zin-
koff, the tournament an-
nounce• and the volatile
McEnroe pointed to the
Zink and shouted: "And how
about the Zink? He surely is
the greatest."
Knowin&the Zink as I do,
he made no attempt to
argue the point.
