Sphingolipids
conference

If you're not

Rehovot — Some of the
100 genetic maladies
specific to Jews, including
such killers as Tay-Sachs
and Gaucher's disease, were
spotlighted at an Interna-
tional Symposium on
Sphingolipids, Sphingolipid
Disorders and Demyelinat-
ing Diseases that took place
recently at the Weizmann
Institute of Science.
Genetic diseases — about
3,500 of them in all — have
long been known ta, man.
And those that afflict Jews
have been documented both
in the Bible and the Tal-
mud. Sphingolipids — fatty
materials found in the
nervous system — have
been implicated in a
number of these diseases,
and especially in Tay-
Sachs, Gaucher's and
Nieman-Pick's. Prof. David
Shapiro of the institute is
renowned for, among other
things, being the first to
have successfully synthe-
sized in a pure state some of
the basic sphingolipid
molecules, a necessary first
step towards understanding
their role in the living cell.
