Rabbis arrested

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Ashkenazi and Sephardic
Chief Rabbis of Petah Tikva
and five other Orthodox
Jews were detained by the
police on Friday for holding
an illegal demonstration,
obstructing traffic and pre-
venting entry into the
municipality building.
They were released before
the start of the Sabbath,
after questioning.
When a few score Or-
thodox Jews began to
demonstrate outside the
municipality building to
protest the mayor's refusal
to rescind his permission for
Friday night film shows and
the opening of cafes on the
Sabbath, police warned
them that the site of their
protest was not covered by a
demonstration permit.
Movie patrons last Friday
night were disappointed
when the scheduled film,
Yentl, was withdrawn and
replaced by a rerun of an old
Alfred Hitchcock film, Ver-
tigo.
