Kosher Nostra
I don't know whether the
story of the "Kosher Nostra"
in The Jewish News of
March 30 was supposed to
be humorous.
Excluding one or two
statements, the item lacked
humor.
That there are Jewish
crooks isn't doubted, but I
have my doubts about
gangster-run yeshivas. Im-
agine the tumult that
would follow if a shul's
members were to learn that
their rabbi was ordained by
purchasing credentials
from a "degree factory."
The item about an ath-
letic scholarship at a rab-
binical seminary, I will ad-
mit, caused me to smile. I
imagine the yeshiva spon-
sors the annual Gefilte Fish
Bowl on White Fish Bay,
Mich., the Upper Peninsu-
la's biggest football specta-
cle.

Bookbinder
and Jackson
It was with deep chagrin
that we read the Detroit
Free Press report (Mar. 23)
of Hyman Bookbinder, a
lobbyist for the American
Jewish Committee, who
characterized Rev. Jesse
Jackson as an "absolute
scoundrel" . . . "correctly
perceived as an adversary,
an opponent — some would
say an enemy" of Israel and
Jewish American interests.
The Metropolitan Detroit
Chapter of the New Jewish
Agenda sees Jackson's
campaign as important in
that it has raised the issues
of economic equality for all
people in the country. This
includes the 15 percent of
the American Jewish popu-
lation whose poverty level
entitles them to food
stamps.
We condemn Rev.
Jackson's insulting re-
marks about Jews as we
commend his courage in
apologizing — an action
which neither President
Truman nor President
Nixon (when they made
anti-Jewish remarks) had
the courage to take. We
hope that he will develop a
serious dialogue with the
Jewish community to edu-
cate himself and his cam-
paign associates about
Jewish concerns.
We think that Mr. Book-
binder did the Jewish com-
munity a disservice by
exacerbating the relations
between the Jewish and
black communities.
