New York — Yom
Hashoah, Holocaust Re-
membrance Day, should be
observed not only by Jews,
but also by Christians, ac-
cording to the National
Council of Churches' office
on Christian-Jewish Rela-
tions.
"It's a mistake to say that
Yom Hashoah is only a
Jewish event," said the Rev.
David E. Simpson, that
office's director, of the day
which falls this year on
April 29. "Remembering
the Holocaust is not just
something the Jewish
community should be ex-
pected to do.
"The Holocaust is part of
the history of anti-Semitism
which has grown out of the
tension between the church
and synagogue, and as such
it is a part of Christian
church history," he said.
"Therefore it is appropriate
that Christians remember
the Holocaust and ask God's
forgiveness for Christian
complicity in anti-
Semitism."
"We would like to see as
many churches as possible
observe Yom Hashoah on
April 29," said Simpson, a
United Church of Christ
minister. To help, the
NCCC Office on Jewish-
Christian relations is dis-
tributing a packet of re-
sources on Holocaust re-
membrance to churches.
Each packet includes a
rationale for Christian ob-
servance of Yom Hashoah, a
sample bulletin cover and
insert for use at church
services, several articles on
the Holocaust and on Chris-
tian responsibility for it,
guidelines for Jews and
Christians in joint worship
and for Christian use of
Jewish prayers and cus-
toms, a bibliography on the
Holocaust, Judaism and
Jewish-Christian relations,
and an order blank for addi-
tional resources.
