Embassy move
fights Soviets

0

New York (JTA) - The
real issue of his bill to move
the American Embassy
from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem
is to stop, the unyielding,
unending assault of the
Soviet Union on the legiti-
macy of the State of Israel,"
Senator Daniel Patrick
Moynihan (D-N.Y.) told a
rally of the New York
region of the Union of Or-
thodox Jewish Congrega-
tions of America.
"It's fascinating," the
Senator said, "to follow the
pattern of the Soviet cam-
paign . . . First, at a meeting
of the Organization of Afri-
can Unity in Sierra Leone,
all references to 'Israel' dis-
appear and there are only
references to the 'Zionist
entity.' No name - just a
concept.
"Before you know it,
`Zionist entity' replaces 'Is-
rael' in U.N. resolutions."
The Senator then traced
the pattern through a 1980
U.N. resolution - that the
United States voted for -
which declared Jerusalem
"Arab territory," and the
mass exit, also agreed to by
the United States, of foreign
embassies from Jerusalem.
At first, the Senator ob-
served, U.S. officials in-
sisted, "they only meant
East Jerusalem." But then
in 1983, 101 non-aligned
nations demanded Israel
must unconditionally with-
draw from West Jerusalem
and turn it over to the
Palestinians.
"I decided somehow we
must stop this. And what I
did was to propose an
amendment to move the
embassy to Jerusalem . . ."

Israelis prefer
Navon in poll

Tel Aviv (JTA) - A popu-
larity poll published in
Maariv this week shows

Prime Minister, with 27.5
percent, followed by Yit-
zhak Shamir with 10.9 per-
cent and Shimon Peres in
third place, at 7.4 percent.
The poll was taken after
the Knesset decision to hold
early elections, but before
Navon had agreed to forego
competing with Peres for
Labor Party leadership.
Other percentages in the
poll were: Yitzhak Rabin,
6.9 percent; Menachem Be-
gin, 5.9; Ezer Weitzman,
4.9; Ariel Sharon, 3.5;
David Levy, 3.2; Moshe
Arens, 1.5; and 29.2 percent
without preference.

Minister were: Abba Eban,
18.6 percent, Yitzhak
Shamir, 12.3; Moshe Arens,
5.1; Yitzhak Rabin, 4.7;

Levy 3.1.
For Defense Minister:
Arens, 21.9; Sharon, 13.9;
Weizman, 11.3; Rabin, 10.9;
