Rachel Beck, all of Israel;
and three grandchildren.

former Detroiter of
Anaheim, Calif., died
March 28. Survived by her
husband, Joe; two sons,
Sheldon of Anaheim and
Harold of Las Vegas, Nev.;
seven grandchildren and

Samuel Kayne

Samuel A. Kayne, an at-
torney and president of the
Hebrew Benevolent
Society, died March 29 at
age 77.
Born in Russia, Mr.
Kayne lived 64 years in the
U.S. He attended the Rabbi
Isaac Elchanan Theological
Seminary in New York,
City College of New York
and St. Lawrence Law
School in New York.
He was a practicing at-
torney for 54 years. Mr.
Kayne was a member of the
Detroit, Oakland County
and Michigan Bar Associa-
tions. He was the president
of the Bladimiritzer Relief
Society and a member of
Adat .Shalom Synagogue,
Jewish National Fund and
B'nai B'rith Pisgah Lodge.
Mr. Kayne is survived by
his wife, Belle; a son,
Michael M.; a daughter,
Mrs. Louis (Deborah)
Aaron; a brother, Aryeh
Koziol of Israel; a sister,
Mrs. Golda Lichtig of Israel;
and two grandchildren

Isaac Gruskin

Isaac Gruskin, a founder
and past president of the
Rovner Progressive Aid
Society, died March 29 at
age 98.
Born in Russia, Mr.
Gruskin lived many years
in Detroit prior to making
his home in Miami Beach,
Fla. He also was a past
president and one of the or-
ganizers of the Carpenters
Union. He was a self-
employed carpenter.
He leaves two sons, Ben of
Southfield and Morris of
Farmington Hills; six
grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
Interment Detroit.

Natan Zahavi, the last
surviving defender of Tel
Hai, died April 1 in Haifa at
age 93.

Recha Freier, founder of
youth aliya, died in
Jerusalem April 2 at age 92.
Although the late Hen-
rietta Szold is popularly re-
garded as the founder of the
youth aliya organization
which helped save
thousands of youngsters
from the Nazis and set them
6n a new road in Palestine,
it was actually Freier who
started the movement and
later persuaded Szold, then
president of Hadassah and
director of the social serv-
ices bureau of the Vaad
Leumi, the ruling body of
Jewish Palestine, to provide
funds for it.

A. LEON PECK, 70, of
Southfield, died March 30.
Survived by his wife, Bella;
a daughter, Mrs. Paul
(Donna) Cagney of Nantuc-
ket, Conn.; and three
grandchildren.

Heritage week

New York (JTA) — The
eighth annual national cel-
ebration of Jewish Heritage
Week has been set for May
6-13, under the joint spon-
sorship of the Jewish Com-
munity Relations Council of
New York and the city's
Board of Jewish Education
and Board of Education.
The 1983 celebration, in-
volving more than 750,000
students and thousands of
adults in communities
throughout the New York
metropolitan area, was also
observed in 20 other cities.

Professional
development

New York (JTA) — A
program has been created in
New York City which will
for the first time train spe-
cialists in Jewish social
work, community develop-
ment and fund-raising.
The United Jewish
Appeal-Federation of New
York and the Wurzweiler
Social Work School of
Yeshiva University will
provide scholarships lead-
ing to a master's degree in
social work for 15 students.

Reconciliation?

Houston (ZINS) —
Former Secretary of State
Henry Kissinger said here
last month that a potential
agreement between Syria
and Lebanon should be con-
sidered a victory for Syria
and not a reconciliation.
