Symposium speakers in- clude Dr. Eberhard Bethge, leading authority on Diet- rich Bonhoeffer, killed by Hitler; Dr. Dorthee Soelle of Hamburg, Catholic Bishop Thomas Gumbleton of De- troit, and Dr. Paul Lehmanri of New York. In May of 1934, a group of German Protestants, faced with seizure of political power by the National Socialist Party and wide- spread support of the Party ideological claims by church leaders and the laity, issued a "Barmen Declaration" creating an anti-Nazi "Confessing Church." It was one of the few pub- lic denunciations of Na- tional Socialism proclaimed during the 12-year period of the German Third Reich. Mubarak cautious on Soviet return Cairo (ZINS) — Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said the return of the Soviet ambassador to Cairo would come at the "proper time" in an interview on Yugoslav television last month. The late President Anwar el- Sadat expelled the Soviet envoy in 1981, accusing Moscow of interfering in Egypt's internal affairs. The Egyptian president also expressed a desire for improved relations with Syria, saying that he "greatly appreciated" the efforts of Syrian President Hafez Assad. William Safire His political columns have been collected in Sa- fire's Washington. Safire first got his start reporting for the New York Herald Tribune, later serv- ing as a correspondent for New York radio and televi- sion stations. He also built a public relations firm serv- ing dozens of corporate and financial clients and be- came best known for ar- ranging the "kitchen con- ference" in Moscow between Nixon and Khrushchev. Pesach custom explained BY RABBI SAMUEL FOX A number of Jews bake matzot on the afternoon be- fore Passover. This is the time when the Paschal lamb was sacrificed and offered on the alter. Since the Bible, in the Book of Exodus, seemed to have mentioned the lamb offer- ing and the matzot close to each other; some people in- sist on baking the matzot at just about the time the lamb was originally offered (the afternoon before Passover). On the other hand, many prepare the matzot a good deal of time before this day to 'avoid the possibility of fermentation beforehand. Obviously, those who bake their matzot on the after- noon before the Passover holiday begins have to be especially careful to avoid the slightest amount of fer- mentation. Copyright 1984, JTA Inc.
