Jewish identity
strong despite
changes: study
New York — Despite de-
mographic changes and a
high rate of intermarriage
and assimilation, Jewish
identity in coming decades
will remain a strong and
vibrant force in American
life, according to a recent
report published by the
American Jewish Congress.
The 36-page report,
e ntitled, "The American
Jewish Community in the
21st Century," was pre-
pared for AJCongress' bi-
ennial convention last
month in Baltimore. It as-
serts that while a growing
polarity exists between the
Orthodox and other seg-
ments of the Jewish com-
munity, a "strong Jewish
consensus" will continue on
key issues of traditional
Jewish concern.
Prepared by Dr. Donald "
Feldstein, an authority on
Jewish communal rela-
tions, the report acknowl-
edges "a very serious de-
mographic problem for the
Jews in the United States."
With the threat of high at-
trition due to such factors as
intermarriage and low
birth-rate, "we could enter
the 21st century with just
over 4.6 million Jews," ac-
cording to the report, nearly
500,000 fewer people than
current estimates of the
Jewish population.
Plight of Latin
Jews outlined
New York — Jacobo
Kovadloff, director of South
American affairs • and
Spanish media for the
American Jewish Commit-
tee, said last month that the
Jews have alway's had to
face rejection in Latin
America, but they did not
surrender to it.
Speaking at a session of
the Research Conference on
the Jewish Experience in
Latin America, at the Latin
American Institute, the
University of New Mexico
at Albuquerque. Kovadloff
stated that "the Jews knew
how to fight for their rights
with dignity and without
cowardice."
They were thereby able to
educate large segments of
the general population, he
added, "ridding them of
anti-Jewish prejudice and
sharing with them the uni-
versal struggle for democ-
racy, justice, equality and
respect among all men and
women."
