Lubavitch offer document
assisting with chometz sale

Homeowners may dele-
gate the power of attorney
to Rabbi Betzalel Gottlieb to
perform the mitzva of sell-
ing the chometz, according
to a legal contract drawn up
for Rabbi Gottlieb of the
Lubavitcher Center.
The document, which is
duplicated elsewhere in this
issue, conforms with the
precept that a Jew must sell
all bread and leavened
products that remain in his
home or on his property for
Passover. The homeowner
locks away the chometz that
he wishes to sell in a
specified place in his house,
then the rabbi acts as in-
termediary to transact a
sale of these chometz prod-
ucts to a non-Jew.
For the duration of the
Passover festival this sale is
absolutely legal and bind-
ing according to Torah law
as well as according to state
law; the chometz simply
does not belong to the
homeowner, although it is
in his house. (After
Passover the transaction is
reversed and the chometz
again becomes the property
of the homeowner.)
Rabbi Gottlieb said the
mitzva is often neglected
because it is considered in-

convenient. For this reason,
he has sought the legal as-
sistance of several attor-
neys, who have drawn up a
"Delegation of Power of At-
torney for Sale of Chometz."
There is no cost for this
service, but forms mailed in
must be mailed early in
order to reach the
Lubavitch office no later
than April 13.
Responsibility cannot be
accepted for forms returned
later. Send or bring forms to
Cong. Mishkan Israel
Nusach H'Ari, Lubavitch
Center, 14000 W. Nine
Mile, Oak Park, 48237.
At the same time Rabbi
Gottlieb stressed the impor-
tance of using shmurah
matzah on Passover. The
word shmurah, which
means "watched" in He-
brew, is used to describe
these matzot because the
wheat used in their baking
is carefully watched and
protected against any con-
tact with water from the
moment of harvest on.
Water would cause leaven-
ing and thus disqualify its
use on Passover. Shmurah
matzah is urged for use at
the Seder.

Rabbi Gottlieb, 543-6611.

Bat Mitzvah 'shares' rite

Amy Michelle Lavetter
will become Bat Mitzvah at
9 a.m. Shabat services
Saturday at Cong. Beth
Shalom, where she will twin
her special ceremony with
Elina Goikhman of the
Soviet Union.
Amy is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Mark S.
(Elaine) Lavetter of South-
field.
Elina is the daughter of
Yakov and Janetta
Goikhman of Chernov;itz,
Ukraine. Goikhman is a
building technician who
served in the army until
1969. The family applied for
an exit visa to Israel in Feb-
ruary 1972. He was refused
on the grounds of secrecy
arising out of his army serv-
ice.
In November 1973,
Goikhman's parents
applied and were granted
exit visas; they were prom-
ised that Yakov and Janetta
and Elina would be allowed
to join them within a month.
His parents were told that if
they did not leave im-
mediately, they would
never be granted visas
again.
The Goikhmans came to
Israel but their son was not
permitted to follow. In a let-
ter to him, the parents
wrote of difficulties in the
absorption process in Israel.
KGB agents visited
Goikhman and demanded
that the letter be read on
television. He refused and
when he was not home, they
searched his flat, but could
not find the letter. He was
then called to the ovir and
told he would be sorry for
objecting in this case. Since
then, none of the family's
appeals have been an-
swered.
In June 1977, Goikhman
.f,of

'

went to Moscow to review
his situation and was in-
formed by the Ministry of
Defense that the term of his
secrecy had ended. Yet on
July 3, 1977, he was sum-
moned to the local ovir
office, and cursed. The
Goikhmans were again re-
fused visas.

Bar Mitzvah
`twins' ritual

Yitzhak Gitelman will
share his bar mitzvah with
a Soviet Jewish boy in ab-
sentia at Young Israel of
Southfield services at 9:15
a.m. SatuPday.
Yitzhak will share his
special day with Joseph
Essas of Moscow. Joseph is
the son of Ilya and Anya
Essas who have been denied
visas from the USSR since
1973 on the pretext that
Anya had "state secrets"
due to her employment as
an acoustical engineer.
Ilya, a mathematician, is
one of the organizers of a
group that has been teach-
ing Hebrew and Jewish cul-
ture for the past seven
years. The family has
undergone continual
harassment from the
authorities in addition to
being refused permission to
emigrate to Israel.
Yitzhak is the son of Dr.
and Mrs. Zvi Gitelman of
Southfield.
